Seeking the Turtle Dove

Seeking the Turtle Dove A magical interactive journey commissioned by Forestry England & funded by the Arts Council to publicise the plight of this endangered bird.

Vivify bring creatures, places & ideas to life through puppetry, music, song & story. Follow us on a mysterious trail through the woods to discover captivating sights and sounds of this elusive bird, symbol through the ages of love and peace. Learn about its perilous migration to West Africa and become part of this extraordinary journey with your own kite puppet. Finally let’s celebrate, with song

, it’s hopeful return in spring and it thriving into a sustainable future. Vivify are community artist and Forest Schools teacher Kate Rider, singer and musician Bridget Cousins and puppeteer and sculptor Viv Mousdell. Creative collaboration and audience participation is at the heart of whatever we devise together. In 2020 we were commissioned to research & develop a magical, interactive journey to publicise the plight of the endangered Turtle Dove and to engage young children & their families in its remarkable story. We spent the summer testing ideas out in Dalby Forest. The performance was always intended for small audiences in a natural outdoor setting so despite these troubling times we were still able to conclude with a pilot celebratory event. We trust that we will be able to roll it out once more in the Spring & Summer of 2021 both for Forestry England in Dalby Forest & for any other interested wildlife organisations & schools [particularly suitable for key stage 1] It can adapt to playgrounds, parks, fields and woodlands, as long as there are a few trees or shrubs on which a bird can perch! It’s with deep sadness and enormous gratitude to Kate and Viv that I’m announcing there will be no further performances of Seeking the Turtle Dove. Our wonderful, precious, creative, visionary Kate passed away a year ago well before her time . Now Vivien - the passionate dynamo behind the whole idea, the gentle inspirational artist and Ms Turtle Dove herself - is no longer able to work due to illness. Which leaves just me - the Jilly-come-lately musician , beneficiary of generous ideas and great kindness. I don’t envisage trying to revive this beautiful thing by myself. Thankyou to everyone who has watched, supported and loved this project and all who have learned more about these beautiful birds. To remember Kate and celebrate Viv please support the RSPB and North Yorkshire turtle dove programmes for regenerating habitat and helping the lovely doves return. Much love Bridget
