Petersfield Musical Festival An annual celebration of music and a musical charity supporting & rewarding creative talent. Next festival on from 12 to 20 March 2027

Coming up next on 17-25 March 2023. The Petersfield Musical Festival is both an annual celebration of music and a musical charity which supports and rewards creative talent throughout the year. The Festival takes place in March with concerts in the Festival Hall and St Peter’s Church providing a showcase for local musical talent, young up-and-coming performers as well as internationally-acclaimed artists. Through the biannual Young Composers’ Competition and the Michael Hurd Fund for Young Musicians, the Festival encourages new music and assists young performers many of whom go on to take part in the concerts. For over a century, the Festival has been a hub for the many musical organisations in Petersfield and the surrounding area with choirs, orchestras, chamber groups and wind bands, including those from the local schools all taking part in the Festival Hall built for the purpose in 1935. For more information on the festival, and ways in which you can get involved, provide support or seek sponsorship, visit our website.

🎶 What a day of glorious music-making!

Yesterday we had a fantastic day of singing, diving into Beethoven’s Mass in C and Handel’s magnificent Coronation Anthems. 👑

Beautiful harmonies, regal splendour and plenty of musical energy — all in the company of fellow singers and under the baton of our wonderful Festival Conductor, Paul Spicer. What more could you ask for?

Thank you to everyone who made it such a great workshop. 🎵

Two Michael Hurd Fund recipients give glowing testimonials.

We’re delighted to hear from two young musicians who received Michael Hurd Fund bursaries this summer. 🎶

Lily Gibbs attended Oxford Flute Summer School, where she developed her confidence, performed as a soloist and in a flute choir, and received valuable advice on her conservatoire audition pieces.

Annie Goodridge attended the Wells Cathedral School Piano Course, describing the experience as “truly eye opening” and saying she made enormous progress, strengthened her technique and gained valuable experience.

Both are hugely grateful for the opportunities the bursaries provided.
The Michael Hurd Fund supports aspiring musicians aged 25 and under in Hampshire and the surrounding area.

🎵 New Kids on the Block! 🎵

The Petersfield Children’s Orchestra is bringing young musicians together to learn, make friends and enjoy the magic of playing in an orchestra. Created by local musicians Sara Conroy, Deborah Jenkins and Helen Jackson, the orchestra was launched with support from the Michael Hurd Fund, administered by the Petersfield Musical Festival.

More than 20 children aged 6–13 have already enjoyed weekly rehearsals, led by conductor Nicki Davenport (pictured), and performed their first informal concert. With instruments ranging from violins and cellos to clarinets, flutes, trumpet, French horn and trombone, the future of local music is sounding fantastic! 🎶

The Barber of Seville is coming to Churcher's College, Petersfield, on Sunday 28 June at 7pm, courtesy of New Arts Opera. Scheming, swagger and stupendous singing - just as it should be. Its hilarious and innovative, fully staged production is sung in English and accompanied by the Phoenix Ensemble.
