👧🧒 Water safety is for every child.

Around 40 children aged under 18 drown every year in the UK.

Children aged under 5 and young people aged 13–17 continue to be most at risk, which is why these conversations matter from an early age and need to continue as children become more independent. 💬

This week, we will be using swimming lessons to help children build confidence, understand water safety and learn what to do if they or someone else gets into difficulty. 🏊‍♀️

The file shows that 60% of fatal drownings happen inland — places like rivers, lakes, reservoirs and canals. 🌊

These places can look calm, but hidden dangers can include:

A massive thank you to everyone who came along to our World Cup Opening Ceremony event at Strike.

The atmosphere was brilliant and it was great to see so many local families enjoying the bowling and football together.

💦 Drowning Prevention Week | 13th–20th June 💦

This week we are proud to support Drowning Prevention Week and help spread one very important message:

👉 Water safety knowledge saves lives.

In the UK, there are around 590 fatal drownings every year, with 255 classed as accidental.

That is why learning how to stay safe around water matters — whether you are at the pool, beach, river, lake or reservoir. 🌊

Throughout the week, our swimming lessons will include extra water safety skills, and children taking part will receive a certificate. 🏅

🛟 Drowning Prevention Week - Know the Water Safety Code 🛟

Today marks the beginning of Drowning Prevention Week, and we're encouraging everyone to learn the Royal Life Saving Society UK's Water Safety Code.

Whether you're visiting the beach, a lake, river or swimming pool this summer, these simple steps could help save a life:

🧠 Stop and Think
Take a moment to look for potential dangers and make safe choices before entering the water.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Stay Together
Always stay close to friends and family around water. Never swim alone.

📞 Call 999 in an Emergency
If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. If you're at the coast, ask for the Coastguard.

💙 Float if You Get into Trouble
If you find yourself struggling in the water, float on your back, keep calm and control your breathing until help arrives or you can swim to safety.

By learning and sharing the Water Safety Code, we can all help prevent drowning and enjoy the water safely this summer.

🌊 Drowning Prevention Week at Peterlee Leisure Centre 🌊
📅 13th June – 20th June

We’re proud to support Drowning Prevention Week with the Royal Life Saving Society UK, helping spread the important message of staying safe around water.

Throughout the week, our swimming lessons will include extra focus on water safety skills, personal survival and key safety messages to help swimmers build their confidence and knowledge in and around the water.

Every child who participates in our Water Safety Week activities will also receive a certificate. 🏅

Families can also:

💧 Watch out for our Water Safety Code posts on Facebook
📘 Pick up an activity booklet from reception for the little ones
🎨 Pick up and complete water safety posters and crosswords
📲 Share your completed posters with us on social media by tagging us

Water safety knowledge can save lives, so let’s help children learn how to stay safe while still enjoying the water.
