The first concert of the new season at Peterborough Jazz Club is fast approaching on Saturday, 19th September, 7.45pm start, featuring 'Soultime' a great Quintet with five of the finest jazz musicians in the UK. The super front line of trumpeter Steve Fishwick and saxophonist Alex Garnett is backed by a fabulous rhythm section, led by the virtuoso pianist Leon Greening. The music will be soulful, exciting buit always melodic and the concert is for sure one not to be missed.

The New Season at the Jazz Club is not far away and we have a great band kicking off things with 'Soultime' featuring a fabulous front line with trumpeter Steve Fishwick and saxophonist Alex Garnett, backed by the superb Leon Greening trio. The band draws its inspiration from the iconic jazz of the 1950's and 60's featuring reworkings of music from legends of the hard bop era, such as Art Blakey, Bobby Timmons and Lee Morgan. If you enjoy exciting, hard driving, quality jazz this is just the concert for you!

Concert alert! This coming Sunday, 19th July is a concert at the New Theatre entitled 'Timeless Voices of Jazz' bringing years of experience, performing at venues across the world, with a band rooted in the heart of the UK’s vibrant jazz scene.

Timeless Voices of Jazz celebrates the great vocalists whose sound continues to resonate across generations. Inspired by icons such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Diana Krall, the band pays tribute to the singers who shaped jazz through their artistry, storytelling and unmistakable swing.

Their show honours the legends who defined the jazz vocal tradition while bringing their spirit to life for today’s audiences. Through these timeless songs, the band and singers showcase why jazz remains one of the most expressive and enduring art forms.

Collectively, the musicians have performed with an extraordinary list of world-class artists, including Amy Winehouse, Gregory Porter, Michael Bublé, Jacob Collier, Jamie Cullum, Sting, Stewart Copeland, Branford Marsalis, Mark Murphy, Van Morrison, Robbie Williams, Roy Ayers, Westlife, Christina Aguilera, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Sister Sledge, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Humphrey Lyttelton, Jools Holland, Buddy Greco, Sir John Dankworth, Charlie Watts, Michel Legrand, Shirley Bassey, Anton Du Beke, and the Ronnie Scott’s Allstars.

Timeless Voices of Jazz brings the elegance, warmth and emotion of classic jazz vocals into the modern era—capturing a sound that truly lives up to its name.

Some very sad news to pass on to you all. The very fine trumpeter, Nick Hill, sadly passed away yesterday. Despite his blindness which afflicted him in his early twenties as a result of diabetes, Nick became an excellent trumpeter and also a well known promoter of concerts on the Cambridge scene and also further afield. His knowledge of the music was vast and he learnt hundreds of jazz standards and composed some fine tunes himself. Never to be daunted by his blindness, he often played up to 5/6 gigs per week (as well as working full time) and would happily travel by himself on the train from his home in St Neots to Kettner's restaurant in Soho for a trumpet/piano gig in the evening and then get the train home, walking the mile or so from the station at 1.00am, with his blind stick as his comapnion.
Nick played at Peterborough Jazz Club a number of times, the first being in January 1994 with guitarist Dave Cliff. The highlights of his playing career were concerts at Pizza-on-the-Park and Dean Street Pizza Express Jazz Club as well as many gigs at Soho Jazz Festival.
Locally he arranged and played at hundreds of gigs at the Elmtree pub and Hot Numbers, Cambridge and mentored many young musicians in the area to develop their own super talent. The great trumpeter, Art Farmer, met Nick a number of times at Peterborough Jazz Club and they had some great discussions together. The photo (by Mark Heath) shows Nick in his prime.
