The Cultural Door to Bengal: Celebrating Bengali Heritage in Peterborough ( )
A vibrant new arts initiative, "The Cultural Door to Bengal," launched in Peterborough, aiming to celebrate and explore the rich cultural heritage of the local Bengali community. Running from September to October 2024, the project will feature a series of workshops, performances, and exhibitions showcasing traditional Bengali music, crafts, and dance.
Organised in collaboration with the Bengali community and artists from Kolkata, the project bringing the unique traditions of Bengal to life, offering participants an opportunity to learn directly from skilled artists. Through hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, attendees will explore the intricate crafts, lively dance forms, and musical heritage of Bengali culture.
"We are excited to present The Cultural Door to Bengal as a way to bridge cultural gaps and foster a deeper understanding of the Bengali community in Peterborough," said Anamika Ghosh, Project Artist Liaison. "Our goal is to create an inclusive space where everyone can engage with and appreciate the richness of Bengali art and traditions."
Key Highlights of the Project:
• Workshops and Learning Sessions: Weekly workshops every are open to the public, free of charge. These sessions will focus on traditional Bengali crafts, music, and dance, aiming to engage participants of all ages. Join us in Southgrove Community Centre, Grove St, Peterborough PE2 9AG. Traditional Bengal food and drink are providedfree of charge during the session.
• International Artistic Collaboration: The project will include live online connections with renowned artists from Kolkata, offering unique opportunities for cross-cultural learning and artistic exchange.
• Durga Puja Showcase Event: The workshops will culminate in a grand showcase event during the UNESCO-recognized Durga Puja celebrations at Nene Park on 13th October from 3 pm onwards. The event will feature live performances, craft exhibitions, and displays of the community’s creative outputs.
• Partnership with Bengali Sanskriti Club: The project is partnering with the Bengali Sanskriti Club to deliver an authentic cultural experience during the final day of Durga Puja celebrations, providing the wider Peterborough audience a genuine glimpse into Bengali traditions.
