🌿 WHAT IS LED BY THE LAND?

A little glimpse into the place where we’ll be spending our residency together this October.

Rosemerryn. Ancient woodland. Granite. Coast. Footpaths. Standing stones. And the extraordinary landscape of West Penwith.

LED BY THE LAND is a three-day (four-nights) creative residency exploring what happens when we allow landscape to become more than the setting for our work, and instead invite it into the creative process.

Led by Mydd Pharo, Mercedes Kemp, Ellie Williams and Vicky Abbott, we’ll spend our days walking, listening, making, experimenting and sharing practical approaches to creating work in collaboration with place.

There’ll be time outdoors and around the table. Shared meals and conversations. Practical exercises, creative experiments and space to follow your own curiosity.

You don’t need any previous experience of working with landscape.

You don’t need to arrive knowing what you want to make.

Just come curious.

FLOWER FACE R&D — DAY SIX 🌿

And just like that, our final day.

Today we spent the day filming, documenting and recording some of the moments of magic that have emerged over this extraordinary week.

And believe it or not, as Fionn finished dancing in the landscape…

it rained.

Only briefly. But it definitely rained.

After six days of scorching heat, it felt like the land offering us a tiny full stop.

So much love and thanks to our brilliant team and everyone who contributed so courageously and generously to this process — making, playing, experimenting and following the work into the unknown.

Special thanks to the amazing Suzie Zeus 🫀 and family for opening up their home and land to us, and making us feel so incredibly welcome and looked after throughout the week. 🌿

And we are enormously grateful to Arts Council England for funding FLOWER FACE R&D and giving us the time and space to discover what this work might become.

So, what next?

Now we need to find the partners and funding to develop FLOWER FACE further and begin making it into a work for an audience.

There is so much more here to uncover.

For now, we leave this place a little changed, ourselves a little changed, and something new beginning to grow. 🌿

FLOWER FACE R&D — DAY FIVE 🌿

Day Five was filled with singing, recording, owl love songs, goblins devouring guitars, and the sounds of wooden instruments returning to their original tree forms.

We explored bodies with nature. Bodies becoming landscape. Where one might end and the other begin.

And then darkness fell.

The team piled out into the field and we projected, lit, filmed and played.

Out of the earth, the woods, the shadows and beams of light, strange characters and beings began to emerge.

And then our made man came to life.

We watched a life cycle unfold — emergence, transformation, decay and, finally, a return to the earth.

There was something incredibly beautiful about watching the things we had been making all week begin to find their own lives in the landscape.

A massive thank you to Arts Council England for funding this R&D and giving us the time and space to experiment, make, play and follow the work into some very strange places.

Tune in later to see what we got up to on our final day of FLOWER FACE R&D. 🌿

FLOWER FACE R&D — DAY FIVE 🌿

Just in from another extraordinary night in the landscape.

Something is emerging.

Something is shifting.

And tonight, our made man transformed and came to life.

Here’s just a little teaser for now… more tomorrow. 🌿

A massive thank you to Arts Council England for funding this R&D and giving us the space to experiment, play, take risks and follow this strange new world wherever it wants to lead us.

Check back tomorrow and we’ll share more from Day Five of FLOWER FACE R&D. 🌿✨

FLOWER FACE R&D — DAY FOUR 🌿

Today we were joined by the brilliant Fionn Cox-Davies and Laurie Huggett and with the heat still blazing, we did our best to disappear into the shade of the woods.

We spent the day making music, playing, listening, recording and creating puppets that seemed to form themselves from natural materials and from the things the trees had let fall to the ground. Following what was already there rather than forcing something into being.

And then, the eclipse.

Magic.

We have genuinely never seen so many colanders in one place.

As darkness fell tonight, we returned to our made man, who still refuses a name, and began testing moments of transformation. Light, movement, sound and the landscape shifting around him. Beginning to discover what he might become.

There was another feeling running alongside today too.

We were very aware that while we were working in this extraordinary landscape, places across Cornwall, the UK and elsewhere in the world were experiencing spreading fires. We hope everyone affected is safe and well, and that the land is able to recover and heal soon.

A massive thank you, as always, to Arts Council England for funding this R&D and giving us the space to make, play, test, fail, discover and follow the work wherever it wants to go.

Tune in tomorrow to see what happens next… 🌿

FLOWER FACE R&D — DAY THREE 🌿

What an incredible day.

We spent the day completing our man, bringing his four-metre form together just in time for the eclipse.

He still doesn’t have a name.

Perhaps he doesn’t need one. Perhaps nature cannot and should not be given a name. Our human names, anyway.

And then darkness fell.

Thank god, it finally got cooler.

In that small window of darkness, we began filming and experimenting with projection, using a live-feed camera and projecting light back into the landscape.

And for a little while, magic happened.

Things appeared that we hadn’t planned. The landscape joined in and suddenly we could begin to see the world of FLOWER FACE emerging around us.

A massive thank you to Arts Council England for funding this R&D and allowing us the time to experiment, take risks, follow our curiosity and discover the work through making.

And a huge thank you to the amazing Suzie Chaikin, for being our muse. You really can caress a branch like a pro. 🌿

Tune in later today for today’s shenanigans…
