Work of the Week!
Museum Interior, c.1875 by Elizabeth Adela Forbes née Armstrong ARWS (1859 - 1912) Oil on panel. Donated in 2007 by the Artist’s Estate

Born in Ontario, Canada, the much-loved youngest child of a Canadian government official, Elizabeth Armstrong came to England in the 1870s, chaperoned by her mother, to study art at the South Kensington schools. Her father’s sudden death led to a brief return to Canada, after which her studies continued in New York, London and Munich. Further trips throughout Europe allowed Elizabeth to experience life and draw inspiration from different communities. This work demonstrates the constraints faced by women artists in the nineteenth century. Denied access to life drawing at art schools, due to the presence of naked - often male - bodies, the study of busts and statues was a commonplace substitute.

Big news for Cornwall’s art scene — a Tracey Emin work is on show locally!

Among the standout pieces in Making Her Mark: A Celebration of Women in Art is I Loved My Innocence (2019) by Tracey Emin, one of the most influential British artists of her generation.

Born in Croydon and raised in Margate, Emin emerged in the 1990s as part of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement and has become known for her uncompromisingly personal practice across painting, drawing, installation, and neon text.

In I Loved My Innocence, that signature honesty is unmistakable. The work carries a powerful emotional tension — reflecting on the shift from youth to experience, where tenderness and loss sit alongside strength and defiance. It’s intimate, raw, and deeply human.

Part of the wider exhibition Making Her Mark: A Celebration of Women in Art, the work highlights how contemporary women artists continue to reshape the conversation around vulnerability, identity, and expression.

A rare chance to experience Emin’s work here in Cornwall — not to be missed.

I'd like to think there was plenty of good conversation—and perhaps a pint or two—being shared at the Tolcarne Inn when Dod Procter captured this scene in 1935. 🍺

Painted at the commission of the landlady herself, Tolcarne Inn offers a glimpse into the heart of Cornish pub life, where stories, friendships and local communities came together over a drink.

Today, on Beer Day Britain, we're raising a glass to the historic pubs that have long been at the centre of our towns and villages—and to artists like Dod Procter, who preserved these everyday moments on canvas.

Currently on show in Making Her Mark: A Celebration of Women in Art is Windermere and the Langdale Pikes by Dame Laura Knight RA (1877–1970).

An unusual subject for Knight, this evocative Lake District landscape captures the dramatic beauty of Windermere and the Langdale Pikes through an impressionistic style, rich colour palette, and expansive western sky.

A trailblazer in British art, Laura Knight was made a Dame in 1929 and, in 1936, became the first woman elected a Royal Academician since the Academy's founding women members in 1768. She later served as an official war artist during the Second World War, with her first commission supporting the Women's Land Army.

Visit Making Her Mark to discover this remarkable work and celebrate the achievements of women artists who broke barriers and shaped art history.

On this day in 1858, Henry Scott Tuke was born.
A great friend of Thomas and Caroline Gotch, with whom he studied at the Slade School of Art in London, Henry Scott Tuke first visited Newlyn at their instigation in 1879. He returned in 1883 and found the village inspirational, declaring that it was ‘simply reeking with subjects’.

A passionate sailor, he eventually chose to settle in Falmouth, keeping this as his base for the next 40 years. He continued to visit Newlyn frequently, maintaining his friendships with various members of the colony.

In 1886, Tuke bought an old French brigantine called the ‘Julie of Nantes’, which became his floating studio. He frequently painted other craft in the water, using the intimate knowledge of rigging and seamanship to excellent effect.

As a painter, Tuke adored painting the human form ‘en plein air’, using local boys as his uninhibited models. He is also well known for his portraiture, which proved to be a more lucrative form of painting.

Throwback Thursday 🌊

A glimpse back in time to a carefree summer day at Jubilee Pool, where a group of unidentified young bathers pause to pose for the camera. Simple moments like these capture the spirit of seaside life in its most relaxed and joyful form.

Do you recognise anyone in this photograph, or remember when it might have been taken? We’d love to hear your memories or any information in the comments.

For today's Art UK theme, Football and the World Cup, we've selected Football Match (1941) by Clifford Hall (1904–1973), from the collection of the National Football Museum.

Painted during the Second World War, Hall captures the energy and excitement of the game, reminding us of football's enduring ability to bring people together, even in challenging times.

Work of the Week!
The Beige Hat by Leonard John Fuller (1891 - 1973). Donated in 2025.
This is a portrait of Fuller’s wife and fellow artist, Marjorie ‘Nancy’ Mostyn.

The portrait and still life painter Leonard John Fuller was one of the key figures in the St Ives artists’ colony. His early artistic promise was interrupted by the First World War, where he served alongside fellow artist Robert Borlase Smart. Deeply affected by his war experience, Fuller went on to dedicate his life to teaching and painting. In 1938, he founded the internationally renowned St Ives School of Painting with his wife and fellow artist Marjorie Mostyn.
