Based in West Penwith and surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery and the dramatic ever changing weather fronts of West Cornwall, I paint abstracts of colour and texture. Having originally trained to work with blown glass and ceramic processes; recollections of the heat and flow of molten glass and the array of colours and textures obtained through Raku and Stoneware firings hold an enduring inf
luence upon my current painting practice. My work reflects an instinctive curiosity at the assortment of rhythmic patterns which occur to differing extents in both of these creative processes as well as in the breathtaking natural environment by which I am surrounded. Texture, surface treatments and colour are intensely important aspects of my work. My paintings are composed using a wide range of media, from inks and varnishes, oils and emulsions to ash, cement, earth and clays. Each layer I paint develops the history of the surface. Layers accumulate and influence as they build towards a rich and engaging visual abstraction, a narrative account or recollection of place, memory, sight and sounds.
