Simon Hartles - Artist

Simon Hartles - Artist Instagram.com/simon_hartles These forms albeit abstracted through memory and process are recurrently apparent throughout my work.

Based in West Penwith and surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery and the dramatic ever changing weather fronts of West Cornwall, I paint abstracts of colour and texture. Having originally trained to work with blown glass and ceramic processes; recollections of the heat and flow of molten glass and the array of colours and textures obtained through Raku and Stoneware firings hold an enduring inf

luence upon my current painting practice. My work reflects an instinctive curiosity at the assortment of rhythmic patterns which occur to differing extents in both of these creative processes as well as in the breathtaking natural environment by which I am surrounded. Texture, surface treatments and colour are intensely important aspects of my work. My paintings are composed using a wide range of media, from inks and varnishes, oils and emulsions to ash, cement, earth and clays. Each layer I paint develops the history of the surface. Layers accumulate and influence as they build towards a rich and engaging visual abstraction, a narrative account or recollection of place, memory, sight and sounds.

I’m loving these mini paintings at the moment. It’s like the pressure is off, freedom to explore. It’s my version of a sketchbook of ideas, reflections of the world as it’s woken up from its long winter slumber.

Back by popular demand. My little friends and their family. The captions suggest I said bu****it, which is quite apt but clearly lost in translation…. Bushes I said bushes!! 🤣.

Nature watch, after work. Long day teaching, assessments, paperwork, not my favorite part of being an art teacher. Came home a met up with a few of the local girls, had a chat over the garden wall. They seem a decent bunch, mostly friendly and they do like a handful of nasturtiums. The little one was born about 2/3 wks ago, pretty close to where he’s standing now. Life is insanely busy and then sometimes it’s just absolutely priceless. I’ll take these moments and enjoy them while I can.
Ps.. the auto captions .. first time I’ve used them hahaha 😂

Here’s another piece from a new series of mini paintings. The sunrise out in West Cornwall never ceases to amaze. Those colours in the sky, the perfect contrast of land and sky, a fast and furious changeover from yesterday to the promise of a new world. It might actually be my favorite time of day. What’s your favorite time of day? Let me know.. below.

I don’t have many photos of me and my dad, but this one of us in ‘twin’ shirts with my daughter is up there with the absolute most adorable. Terrifyingly bad shirts, and the sweetest granddaughter Maya plonking a vessel on her head for no apparent reason. It all seems perfectly reasonable. In hindsight it was a lovely moment.
We lost him, 2yrs ago. We all miss him so very much.
We had our moments of love, silence, arguments and absolute joy.
And we will have them all again.
Thank you dad for everything.
I’m trying my best.
See you soon.
Love you loads.
