Magical Poppet Making Workshop
🪡✨

At Witch Festival Cornwall- join us for a Magical Poppet Making Workshop, where you’ll be guided through the creation of your very own enchanted poppet.
Cornwall workshop lead by Louisa Darling 🪶

Poppets have a long history within folk magic and witchcraft. Across different traditions, handmade figures have been used as symbolic representations of a person, an intention or a desired outcome. They could be made for healing, protection, love, prosperity, blessing and transformation, with herbs, threads, colours, fabrics and personal symbols chosen to give the work meaning.

Poppets can be beautiful tools of sympathetic magic, a tangible way of focusing our thoughts, hopes and intentions into something we have created ourselves.

There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about sitting with fabric, thread, herbs and your own imagination, slowly stitching together something that carries a little piece of your magic.

There is an old magic between women and water.

Perhaps because we understand tides.

The pull and release.
The filling and emptying.
The cycles that cannot be hurried.
The knowledge that something can be both soft and immensely powerful.

And nowhere do I feel that relationship more deeply than on the wild western edge of Cornwall, where the land finally gives itself back to the Atlantic.

Yesterday I walked down to Nanjizal, to the extraordinary sea cave known as Song of the Sea, Zawn Pyg, a narrow opening carved through the Cornish granite by centuries of water.

And somehow, impossibly in August, I had it completely to myself.

I slipped into the clear water and swam alone into the cave.

Just the sound of my breath synchronised with the Her cosmic breath.

Just woman, rock, salt, sea and that strange blue-green light filtering through the opening.

It felt less like swimming into a cave and more like entering something.

A threshold.

A place between land and ocean, light and darkness, the known world and whatever lies just beyond it.

Cornwall is full of these liminal places: holy wells, caves, springs, tidal pools, and its folklore has long entwined water with healing, mermaids, spirits and the Otherworld. There are even old Cornish traditions of ritual bathing and immersion in sacred waters.

Perhaps that is why swimming there alone felt so profoundly feminine & magical.

For thousands of years women have gone to water to wash, birth, mourn, pray, heal, gather, surrender and begin again.

And sometimes we still do.

Not because someone has told us it is sacred.

But because our bodies recognise something our minds have forgotten.

Yesterday, alone in the Song of the Sea, I didn’t need to perform a ritual.

The swimming was the ritual.

The salt was the blessing.
The cave was the temple.
The sea was the spell.

And for a little while, held inside that ancient Cornish rock with the Atlantic breathing beyond me, I remembered that we belong to the wild too.

🌊 🜄 🌀🌙

May we always find our way back to the waters that remember us.
