Cecilia's Hand-spun Yarn

Cecilia's Hand-spun Yarn Luxurious yarns for knitting, crochet and weaving, hand-spun in Cumbria with spinning wheel and spindle. Hand-spun embroidery and darning threads.

Cecilia is a hand-spinner, working mostly with the wool of a local breed of sheep in Cumbria, the Blue-faced Leicester, but also with other natural fibres, such as silk and the mohair from her own goats. She works with spinning wheel and spindle to create colourful and textured yarn, with a distinctive style inspired by the local landscape, and she writes a brief nature note to accompany each skei

n, describing its inspiration. The yarn can be used for weaving, knitting and crochet, as well as embroidery and darning, but is often sold as a decorative item in itself, to nestle in a handcrafted bowl, or to be worn as a necklace. Cecilia's husband, Graham, weaves the yarns into beautiful scarves.

About two years ago, I sat for a while at this beautiful estuary in Northumberland and knitted my blue socks. Today, they’ve needed their first repair, so I’ve been darning them with some of the yarn I spun about the place.

Today's work was the great winding-off of embroidery thread singles from spindles, ready for plying. But a spindle can never stay empty for long! So more spinning has started already, with beautiful Shetland wool dyed by Freyalyn.

Imp the Angora Goat is delighted to be rid of his heavy winter fleece! Today, I sorted it and washed some for spinning. I always share it with the birds and left some in the garden. Within a couple of minutes, a sparrow was offering a beakful of the lovely mohair to his mate!

When not at the spinning wheel, I dye mill-spun wool and write patterns for it. It is always a delight to see what people make with my yarn and these socks by Jackie Needham Ceramics are wonderful! I do like the way the yarn has made little stripes on the heels and toes.

I finally finished my first pair of socks using your pattern and beautiful wool Cecilia! x
