Look at that shine 😁

For regular visitors to my flock you will know how I fret about the last stage of each piece of pottery I make : applying that transparent glaze 😬 getting the consistency just right so that it’s transparent and not translucent which will mask all the decorative detail under. 😞

Put the clay aside today… 🐑✂️
My studio desk is covered in clay, so I escaped to the dining table to make a couple of paper collage postcards for ❤️

I’m joining lots of wonderful artists and makers creating original postcard-sized artworks, each just £20, to help Finlay Cormack get to the USA for life-saving heart surgery.

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately… and this is why! 🐑
I’m absolutely delighted to have been accepted for Oxton Art Fair at the Williamson Art Gallery in November.
I am quietly working away, creating a whole new flock of pottery sheep especially for the fair.
Yes, fewer posts lately, but there’s been plenty happening in the studio!
I’ll be sharing some of the new work as it takes shape over the next few weeks. 🐑🤎

In the studio today adding more finishing touches. 🖌️
This tea caddy just needs it’s transparent glaze before it can leave the flock 🐏🐑🫖☕️

A sheep gathering vase 🐏🌾🐏

But see how much of a process it was just to get the finishing touches right!

Photo captions:
1. Finished painting and ready for a transparent glaze. This is the result after all the steps below.
2. Wetting the piece: water gives the illusion of a glaze and deepens the colours. Sometimes the glaze is all it needs, other times it wants an extra something.
3. Using my iPad again as an aid to visualise how my ideas would look. Marking up the photo lets me try out extra colour without touching the pot itself — once I commit on the pot, there’s no going back!
4. Trying white accents around the rims... yuk!!
5. Trying dark accents, and sanding back the base (you can see the terracotta-coloured fine pen lines).
6. Just the base? ...No, it felt unbalanced.

How I fit an entire flock of sheep into a pottery kiln…
Fifty-nine of them 🐑🐏!!
Three shelves.
One very carefully planned firing.
I won’t lie : I always hold my breath a little at this moment.
But they all made it. Every last sheep.

A slab of brown terracotta, torn at the edges, a sheep sketched straight into the clay, and then the end curled around to hold a candle.

This little candlestick feels like it came straight from the earth where the flock gathered 🕯️🐑
