Making the most of the sunshine by experimenting with a new process: cyanotype

Cyanotype is an early form of photography that uses UV light to create these distinctive blue-and-white one off prints. For these first pieces, I combined plant life from my garden with hand-cut stencils to create silhouette portraits.

I'm exploring the possibility of offering affordable family and pet portrait commissions, creating custom cyanotypes from your own photographs, which I would transform into hand-cut stencils before exposing them in the sun.

I'd love to hear what you think of these early experiments?

Thank you to everyone who joined us for another lovely creative evening at Art Clinic. Time was spend sharing ideas, talking about creative ambitions and exploring different materials.

We’ll be meeting again next Thursday from 7–9pm at St John’s Community Centre, and everyone is welcome, whether you're continuing a project, trying something new, or simply looking for a friendly space to create.

I wonder what people will bring to 'Art Clinic' tonight?

A very inspiring studio visit!

I took these snaps today to show my friend Dave but thought you'd all love a peek inside the studio and gallery of Chris Cyprus.

Having watched Chris as a pod artist on Landscape Artist of the Year, it was amazing to get his first hand tips on battling the elements and the clock while painting en plein air. We talked Hockney, looked at his incredible textured grounds and toured pieces in production of all different scales. I loved seeing how he works, surrounded by a mix of talk radio and ambient music.

I'm delighted to share that I'll be returning as a Wildcard Artist on Sky Arts' Landscape Artist of the Year for a second time!

This year I'll be heading to Brimham Rocks, North Yorkshire. I'm really looking forward to the challenge of working out in the landscape, responding to whatever the day brings.

A huge thank you to Jennifer Margaret Jones for kindly loaning me a mobile easel for the occasion. It's going to be a great help on location and very much appreciated.
