St Illtyd's church Pembrey - Tower repairs
We're delighted to say that the essential and urgent works of repair and renovation to the upper stage of the tower of Pembrey Church, a Grade 11* listed building of historical importance and a landmark to the area, have very recently been completed at a little over £40,000. This money was largely donated by a National Lottery Heritage grant as well as a Church in Wales grant and fundraising from the church congregation and local community.
This reflects the significant heritage of the church building, the tower of which is believed to have been built during the early sixteenth century. It is 21 meters high, and 7.6 meters wide at the base. The upper stage also houses the three historical bells. The four louvred openings had deteriorated over recent years and had become a risk of damage to the church roof.
The works now undertaken included the provision of additional support to the soffits of the four openings of the tower, as well as measures to eliminate the effect of adverse weather particularly on the bells and their significant time beam supports.
We're all extremely grateful for the grant awarded by the National Lottery Heritage fund and all of the hard work from local volunteers which has made this happen.
Hope to see you all at the Summer fayre and although the tower is restricted access - you can come and have a look around this wonderful church.
