Today we are sharing Boo Savilleโ€™s exhibition GENTLE at Bo Lee Gallery, Bruton, Somerset until 13 June 2026. We exhibited Savilleโ€™s work in โ€˜VESSELโ€™ (2024) and โ€˜PELTโ€™ (2026).

GENTLE, a solo exhibition by Boo Saville, brings together a group of paintings depicting men and boys. Working from fragmented and digitally sourced images, Saville paints figures that seem to sit between strength and vulnerability, closeness and distance, and what is visible and what is hidden.

Echoing the moral unease of The Picture of Dorian Gray, these portraits appear suspended between surface and truth; their identities are mediated through the distortions of online culture and the so-called โ€œmanosphereโ€.

Through blurred forms and glitch-like painterly gestures, the works resist clarity, inviting viewers to look through uncertainty toward what lies beneath. Moments of tenderness, grief, care and isolation sit uneasily alongside ideals of control, performance, and self-mastery. Rather than offering resolution, the paintings hold these tensions in place, asking how masculinity is shaped by community, expectation, and the pressures of visibility. Drawing on ideas of compassion and love articulated by thinkers such as James Baldwin and bell hooks, the exhibition invites us to consider what is hidden, suppressed, or denied within contemporary male identity.Image: Dave Watts Courtesy of Bo Lee Gallery.ย

This week we are sharing David Surmanโ€™s exhibition Soft Eye, Hard Nose at THEO Gallery Jakarta until 6 June 2026. We exhibited Surmanโ€™s work in โ€˜Neo-Gothicโ€™ (2023) and โ€˜PEDIGREEโ€™ (2025).

In Soft Eye, Hard Nose, David Surman reflects on the enduring presence of the horse as both a personal and cultural symbol. Rooted in memory and shaped by a lifelong familiarity, the horse emerges in his work not merely as subject, but as a vessel of meaningโ€”bridging past and present, reality and imagination.

Once central to human movement and survival, the horse now exists within a more emotional and symbolic realm. Through expressive, intuitive painting, Surman explores this shiftโ€”capturing the animal as a mirror of human complexity, where tenderness and tension coexist, and where form becomes a site for reflection on memory, instinct, and inner life.

Moderated by Tom Cardwell
With exhibiting artists Vivien Delta, Roland Knowlden, Ruba Nadar and Eric Parker

Bringing together artists at different stages of their careers, this panel will consider how practices are built, sustained and continually reworked over time. Through approaches spanning collage, painting, and sculpture, the conversation will explore how artists assemble meaning from fragments: memory, archive, material and lived experience.
Reflecting the dual position many artists occupy as both learners and educators, the discussion will move between studio practice and pedagogy, asking how knowledge is formed, shared and challenged within contemporary art contexts.
Moderated by Tom Cardwell, the panel will feature exhibiting artists Vivien Delta, Roland Knowlden, Ruba Nadar and Eric Parker, whose work engages with systems of power, cultural memory, image-making and the construction of personal and collective narratives.

Jonah Hoffman (b. United States, 1998) is a painter based in London whose work examines how histories of extraction, colonialism, and geopolitics are bound to the materiality of painting. He creates self-reflexive paintings that expose their own material conditions, depicting studio tools, pigment mining landscapes, and screens displaying reference imagery. His work moves between abstraction and hyperrealism, combining print, paint, and text to produce a hybridity of language and technique that foregrounds the processes and systems that construct the painting.

His current focus is cobalt, a mineral used in pigments, batteries, and military technologies, and often extracted under exploitative conditions in postcolonial regions. Hoffman works with cobalt blue as both material and subject, tracing the global systems of energy, labour, and power that produce the colour.
Through painting, he reveals how art production and everyday technology are embedded in systems of exploitation, treating this violence as an imminent presence within paintingโ€™s materiality.

In the words of the artist:
My work stems from memories of strong feelings from adolescence compounded to create an uncanny yet familiar collection of memorabilia. I paint subjects that transport me to that dreamlike place that is found in distant memories and deep recesses of the mind. My work has an undercurrent of Britishness reflecting my heritage and where these embedded yet elusive memories were created. I use subversion in much of my work showing the imperfection and cynicism often present in seemingly mundane life.
I draw a lot of inspiration for my work from films, filmic imagery and world building. Each of my paintings acts as its own vignette and my work as a collective creates a larger microcosm of different adjacent narratives.
I often add elements of humour and whimsy to my work to offset my bleak and sometimes sinister subject matter. My use of humour as a juxtaposition to bleakness is a representation of the British satirical and absurd sense of humour.

In the words of the artist:
My practice delves into the semiotics of consumer imagery, investigating how signs and symbols within advertising and mass media function within our collective psyche. I explore the intersection of these sign systems, where the visual language of consumption not only sells but constructs deeper narratives that resonate on both a sacred and profane level. By mimicking and distorting these signs, I reveal their dual role: one that simultaneously glorifies and trivializes. My paintings investigate the tension between popular imagery and its transformation into symbols of worship, asking how everyday commodities, through repeated visual association, become objects of desire or even reverence.

Vivien Delta is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working primarily across sculpture, drawing and moving image. Her visual language is defined by recurrent graphic elements, talismanic objects, theatricality, distortion, comic tragedy and gestural intensity. She works with clay, aluminium, bronze, ink, charcoal, aerosol sprays and timber to explore the relationship between object, space, time and placement. Through fictional, ritualistic and symbolic narratives, she examines what is essential, what deserves commemoration and how meaning is constructed from fragments. Born in London and raised in Greece, Delta has lived between two cultural frameworks throughout her life. This sustained movement informs her engagement with questions of belonging and authorship, situating personal experience within a broader conversation around inheritance and identity.

In the words of the artist:
Painting is like a dream forming in your mind, you donโ€™t know where youโ€™re going to be taken next. Itโ€™s the fertile ground where images are born and die, they come into reality but sometimes theyโ€™re ghosts, of a thought or a feeling. Once a painting is finished, it begins an afterlife, finding and resonating with an audience.
My paintings thematically weave allegory, art historical references, personal narrative and constructed natural worlds. Executed with a broad array of techniques and applications of paint, the compositions combine figures and environments, reflecting a blend of surrealism and mannerism. The figures that appear are not portraits of specific individuals but characters that represent psychological states. I am drawn to the theatrical compositions and elongated forms found in mannerist frescoes, as well as the dreamlike, subconscious of surrealist imagery.
Now 100 years on from Andrรฉ Bretonโ€™s surrealist manifesto, I reinterpret this tradition constructing surreal Anthropocentric worlds, where characters, strange creatures and animals coexist.
