Ten years ago, a small group of people came together to see learn some sea shanties and maritime music - the folk songs of the communities who were involved in the local fishing industry — to learn about and share to new audiences the stories, the rhythms, and the spirit carried across generations.
Today (well - actually, in February but we’ve been busy don’t you know!) we mark a decade of the Rogues Shanty Chorus, and what a journey it has been.
From our earliest meetings to the many stages, festivals, and gatherings we’ve been honoured to be part of, to side projects and school workshops - our purpose has remained the same: to keep this heritage alive.
These aren’t just songs that we song — they are an important part of local living history. They speak of work, of travel, of hardship, of camaraderie, and of the human need to be heard.
Every chorus we raise is a way of passing something meaningful on to those who come next.
Over the past ten years, we’ve grown not just in number, but in spirit. We’ve welcomed new voices, shared countless laughs, weathered the odd rough tide, and built something that goes far beyond music.
To everyone who has sung with us, supported us, been an audience member in one of our shows, or simply crossed our path — thank you. You are part of our story too.
Here’s to the songs that endure, the heritage we carry, and the years still ahead.
Raise your voices. The work goes on.
(PS: we thank Carly’s mum for the AMAZING cake!! Which tastes as good as it looks)
