Dear Phoenix family,

I have an extra special one off class I would love to share with you all.

There is an inspirational lady I am honoured to know who is taking part in the Macmillans South Coast Mighty Hike Full Marathon. Her name is Nina and she tells her story and journey below -

"*I’m finally taking on the South Coast Mighty Hike on June 13th, pushing my limits to raise £250 in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

My WHY?

My mother passed away of breast cancer when I was only 3 years old. I never got the chance to say goodbye to her, nor did I get the chance to grow up with her love, guidance and nurturing.

During my teenage years and early adolescence, I lost my grandparents. Cancer was a cause again.

Then in 2008, when I was 25, my father passed away of lung cancer. I didn't make it home in time and again I couldn't say goodbye.

I have friends who are still fighting the illness and I am in awe of their strength.

Cancer has been present in my life for as long as I can remember.

In 2013, I ran the London Marathon and raised money and awareness for 'Children with cancer'.

13 years later, on June 13th, I am attempting another marathon length to raise awareness and funds for Macmillan.

Today, almost 3.5 million people in the UK alone are living with cancer, a figure that's growing steadily. Macmillan’s goal is to be there from diagnosis through every step of the journey.

If I can do anything to help, I will!
If my late mama, my late papa, my late grandparents, friends, strangers,....can endure chemotherapy, the life changes and pain - then I can walk for a day!!!

Any donation, no matter how small, will make a difference.

THANK YOU! x "*

Please join me tomorrow, the 8th April, 10am to 11am at Putlands for dance and fun to support Nina and raise money for this amazing charity. All money raised will be added to Nina's sponsor page and go to Macmillan, even Putlands have given the hall time for free. Link below to classmanager to register interest, no payment via this, just so I can get an idea of numbers. Bring your £6 cash on the day and get ready to have some fun all for a good cause. Spread the word as anyone can attend, not just Phoenix Dancers, even if they haven't registered interest beforehand on class manager.

Every lesson we have so much to celebrate and through words of encouragement and praise, little thumbs up and cheers and of course stickers! Our aim is to make sure all children leave class feeling like they have been seen and heard. Each class we end with announcing who our dancer of the week is. This is the child who has gone above and beyond whether that be helping a fellow dancer, sticking at trying to perfect that tricky step or they have showed up on what we know to be a hard day for them and still completely smashed it. It will look different to every child. This used to be a verbal well done and a cheer from the class but I’m proud to introduce our new Dancer Of The Week cards! I hope the dancers will be proud to show these off when they get home and you can join in with celebrating them and the star that they are.

I always told you so!

I always told you so!

A new analysis shows that moving to music with others can be a powerful way to ease symptoms of depression. Unlike walking or yoga, dance engages the brain in a unique “neurochemical symphony,” blending physical activity with joy, connection, and self-expression. Here's why it helps and how to harness it, according to experts: https://on.natgeo.com/4cgaQxw

My dancing heart is full this evening. Recently I had a message from a young lady who used to dance with me from very small up to end of secondary school. She then flew the phoenix nest and went off to uni. The message read how she had recently been reminiscing over old dance videos and pictures and how much she missed dancing with the Phoenix family. Today my baby phoenix flew back and can’t wait for many more weeks and years to come of more memories. She knew she still belonged.

Children’s mental health week is next week and this year’s theme is ‘This is My Place’. We know that our sense of belonging as individuals, in our friendships, in school, and in communities plays a vital role in our mental health and wellbeing. To know our place and really feel part of our environment is a basic human need. It can have powerful and long-lasting impacts in lots of areas of our lives, including our physical and mental health, education, employment and relationships. When we feel that we belong, it empowers us to contribute to the world and make a real difference. I have always hoped that anyone who joins the Phoenix family feels that sense of belonging. They are important and play a vital part of what Phoenix is. They will always have a place to return to in the Phoenix nest.

At Phoenix I hope all the children can proudly say ‘This Is My Place!’.
