🌿 Our first Summer Garden Art session at St. Ethelwolds House is complete, and what a lovely afternoon it was.

🌸We began outside in the garden with observation drawing, slowing down to really notice the flowers in front of us.

✏️Back in the studio, everyone planned their own compositions, shared ideas, enjoyed tea and biscuits, and by the end of the afternoon the group were already chatting like old friends. Seeing everyone’s different interpretations of the same subject is always one of my favourite parts of teaching.

🎨If you’d love to spend your Thursday afternoons painting, my **Creative Painting** autumn course begins this October in Abingdon & Oxford. We’ll explore autumn inspired art in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Beginners are very welcome. 🍂🍁

This autumn, join us at St Ethelwold’s House in Abingdon OR at Summertown Arts, Oxford for a creative painting journey inspired by the changing colours, textures and atmosphere of the season.

Over 9 weeks, you’ll create your own collection of autumn-inspired artworks — from the rich colours of seasonal harvests to atmospheric skies, landscapes and layers of foliage.

✏️The best habit an artist can build!

Keeping a sketchbook is one of the simplest ways to grow as an artist. There have been times I fell off the practice but whenever I caught back to it, I noticed a significant growth in my creative thinking, problem solving, drawing and painting skills! The best benefit… I get faster at making art!

It’s a space to observe, explore new ideas, and strengthen your drawing skills through regular practice. Over time, those small moments of sketching build confidence, improve your observation, and inspire future paintings.

I encourage all of my students to keep a sketchbook…not because every page has to be perfect, but because every page is an opportunity to keep learning.

A little sketching, often, goes a long way. 🌿

This August I'm running a 4-week Summer Garden Art Course at St Ethelwold's House in Abingdon - FOR ADULTS. The course is built around two projects inspired by the garden itself:

🧺 Gathered Blooms: Painted, Cut, and Kept -- sketch, paint and collage garden flowers into a hanging basket, as if freshly picked
🪟 Garden Window: The View I Keep -- paint the view from a window, framed as its own little scene

Both are led gently, step by step, whether you're brand new to art or coming back to it after a break, and the historic house and gardens themselves are a huge part of the inspiration.
