The Furies by Aeschylus

The Furies by Aeschylus The prestigious Oxford Greek Play returns to Oxford Playhouse with The Furies – a gripping new ada Orestes has murdered his own mother, Clytemnestra.

From Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 October, the prestigious Oxford Greek Play returns to Oxford Playhouse with The Furies – a gripping new adaptation of the third play of Aeschylus’ trilogy, the Oresteia. In revenge, she sends the Furies, terrifying spirits who spread poison across the earth. Their vengeance is simple: kill and be killed. But things are changing. In Athens, a criminal court has been

established to end this cycle of murder and Orestes is its first defendant. The Oxford Greek Play is one of the University’s oldest dramatic traditions, making a grand appearance every three years on the Playhouse stage. It is a rare opportunity to see a production in the original Greek (with a projected English translation). The Furies is not just for classics lovers – it promises to be a real spectacle of theatre. This production features a specially commissioned score, an awe inspiring stage-length inspired by the works of Francis Bacon and Henry Moore as well as a new translation by the director, and a vibrant young cast. Tickets to see The Furies at the Oxford Playhouse start at just £11 and can be purchased from the Ticket Office on 01865 305305 or online at oxfordplayhouse.com/show/?eventid=3225

We've heard of a very exciting project taking place in Oxford right now. Any DRAMATIC OR CLASSICIST STUDENTS who are around should get involved.

Here are the details:

We are seeking student actors who might be able to assist us on one of our alumni events (details below). We are seeking students who might be interested in performing poetry (ancient or modern…) or fragments of any kind. We are also seeking students who might be able to read fragments in the original.

Date: Sunday 18th September
Venue: Mathematical Institute, Woodstock Road, OX2 6GG
Times: 11:45-13:15
Session Title: Fragments: a performance poetry exploration - Prof. Fiona Macintosh & Marchella Ward
The mystery of poetic fragments, both ancient and modern, has fascinated scholars and artists alike for centuries. This performance of poetry, dance and live music explores why the gaps in their stories provoke a myriad of creative responses and how the broken shards of antiquity convey infinite possibilities.

Rehearsals:
Tomorrow – 10:00 – 15:00
Friday – 16:00 onwards
Saturday – all day

Interested? (The answer is YES!) Get in touch!

Do check out a play called 'Esarhaddon' (Simpkins Lee Theatre, 3rd week, 29th Oct - 1st Nov, £7/£5)!

"Ever since the violent death of his father, Esarhaddon has lived in fear of insurrection. Despite his benevolent rule, a prophecy sparks a revolt to oust him from the throne. Beset by conflicting omens and advisors, and troubled by more than just conspiracy, will Esarhaddon prove to be the legitimate king?

"Esarhaddon: The Substitute King is a highly ambitious play based on real historical research, set in a period of history not seen on stage for a hundred years.

"The play is set in the strange and beautiful world of ancient Assyria. Like all good historical fiction, it explores issues relevant to our own time while at the same time accurately representing the past. In uncertain times, what has more influence – the facts, or the way they are reported? How do people cope in a pressured environment where suspicion rules and no one can be trusted? What is the role of self belief, and the beliefs of others, on health, confidence, and state of mind? Such questions are just as relevant today as they were more than two and a half thousand years ago in Esarhaddon’s time."
