Step into the director's chair as we unveil the vision behind Orchestra VOX's double-bill: Poulenc's La Voix Humaine and Schoenberg's Erwartung. According to our director, Jonny Danciger, "This double-bill presents two intensely psychological pieces that I have been keen to combine for some time, as I have always felt they represent two sides of the same coin."

🌟 "Uncertainty and Emotional Experience in La Voix Humaine" 🎶
La Voix Humaine, a piece with a rich history in our repertoire, offers a unique perspective. "Its drama lies in its uncertainty," notes our director. In this production, we step into the emotional whirlwind of the protagonist, experiencing the story solely through her reactions – a narrative technique that draws us intimately into her emotional world.

💭 "Erwartung: A Dreamlike Cascade of Thoughts" 🌙
On the other side of this psychological coin is Erwartung. Schoenberg's athematic masterpiece, guided by his fascination with Freud, unfolds as a dreamlike cascade of thoughts. "Erwartung reads as an internal monologue," says our director, inviting the audience to interpret the narrative from the fluid symbols and emotions woven into the music.

“Since 2016, Orchestra VOX has tackled some of the most challenging
music ever written for classical instruments… This double-bill, however, is our most daring undertaking yet.

Erwartung is nothing short of virtuosic for every single orchestral player,
and for the soprano, it is a feat few singers will risk. La Voix Humaine,
on the other hand, demands a sophistication and nuance of musical
taste that few orchestras master.

For these reasons, this has been an
undertaking that required unparalleled dedication, commitment, and
courage from the student musicians, as well as for our local
professionals, and has drawn Orchestra VOX to the next level.”

Bringing opera to Oxford: Four Days Until Showtime! 🎭🎶

Dear music enthusiasts, the moment we've been awaiting is just around the corner! In just four days, Orchestra VOX will embark on a musical journey like never before, presenting a double-bill featuring the emotive masterpieces – Francis Poulenc's La Voix Humaine and Arnold Schoenberg's Erwartung. 🎭🌟

La Voix Humaine
Join us as we delve into the world of raw, unfiltered emotion with La Voix Humaine. Composed in 1958, this one-act opera by Francis Poulenc, inspired by Jean Cocteau's play, unfolds the intimate drama of a woman, known only as "She" (Elle). Poulenc, in collaboration with the brilliant Denise Duval, crafted a soprano role demanding virtuosity and emotional depth. The mystery surrounding "She" intensifies the emotional impact, echoed in the sparse orchestration that allows the soprano's voice to take centre stage amidst a passionate and tumultuous telephone conversation. This is La Voix Humaine – a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the human spirit. 🌹🎭

Erwartung
As the curtains unfold, be prepared for a sonic odyssey with Arnold Schoenberg's Erwartung. This monodrama for soprano and orchestra is a daring exploration of the human psyche. Schoenberg, along with librettist Marie Pappenheim, diverged on their views of the opera – a character study for Pappenheim, a depiction of raw emotion for Schoenberg. The result is a groundbreaking atonal, athematic score that captures every nuance of the Woman's nightmarish journey, oscillating between visceral highs and lows. Erwartung is an invitation to traverse the depths of emotional turbulence through the unparalleled medium of opera. 🌪️🎶

Prepare to be mesmerised by the incredible soprano, Sofia Kirwan-Baez, as she takes the stage in La Voix Humaine on 2nd-4th February 2024.

🎭 Described as 'a superb singer-actress' by Opera Today, Sofia is a Kathleen Ferrier semi-finalist, a Josephine Baker Trust artist, and a recipient of the Sybil Tutton award and Musicians' Company Award. A Young Artist on the National Opera Studio's Global Talent Programme, generously supported by Lionel and Marylynn Anthony, Sofia's operatic journey is marked by excellence and recognition.

🌈 From the emotional depth of Elle in "La Voix Humaine" to the sparkling Adina in "L'Elisir d'amore" and the mythical Eurydice in "Orpheus in the Underworld," Sofia's versatility and captivating performances have left audiences in awe. Her artistry knows no bounds, with an extensive repertoire that spans operatic premieres, oratorio performances, and captivating recitals.

🎓 Sofia's musical journey began in El Sistema in Caracas (Venezuela), evolving from a background in violin and piano to a passion for vocal performance. Studying Music at Oxford University and Vocal Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, she garnered support from Rotary International.

We are thrilled to introduce the extraordinary soprano, Laura Coppinger, who takes the stage in Orchestra VOX's upcoming double-bill opera event on 2nd-4th February 2024.

🎓 Laura recently earned her MMus degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to the world of opera. Passionate about contemporary music, Laura's journey began with the premiere of David Bruce's "Nothing" with Glyndebourne Youth Opera, setting the stage for a remarkable career.

🌈 Laura's repertoire includes operatic premieres like Toby Young's "Witch" and Joel Baldwin's "The Beginning of an Idea." She shone in Manchester Contemporary Youth Opera's "Duality," portraying Maria Josefa/The Negative One, and showcased her versatility in the title role of Nicola LeFanu's "Cantata: St Hilda of Whitby."

🎭 Her role highlights feature Zerlina in "Don Giovanni," Baroness Irene in "La Vera Costanza" (Haydn), and Second Woman in "Dido and Aeneas" (Purcell). Laura's artistry extends to various roles, each delivered with grace, precision, and a deep connection to the music.

🏆 Laura has garnered support from Help Musicians, The Caird Trust, The Sutherland Page Trust, and Broadway Arts Festival, solidifying her status as a rising star in the world of opera.
