Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities

Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities The Schwarzman Centre is a stage set for boundless creativity. Based at the University of Oxford, open to all.

We believe culture is for everyone and are building a programme that allows creativity to flourish. Inspired by Oxford research we’re connecting Oxford with outstanding artists, writers and thinkers from across the world. Many people from across the city and region are already involved as we create new opportunities and new experiences, but if you have an idea or suggestion for a future project or

event, we’d love to hear it. The Cultural Programme is part of the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford and works closely with TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities) and Knowledge Exchange.

A celebration of American music in all its depth and diversity, coming soon to the Schwarzman Centre 🎶

Based in the US, Sphinx Organization works to widen access to music education, championing young talent and amplifying historically underrepresented voices.

Expressive, intimate chamber works, including music by William Grant Still and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, feature alongside Frank Bridge’s richly textured ‘Phantasie’. At the concert’s heart is new work by Cassie Kinoshi, whose ‘stillness: two meditations for piano quintet’ offers a reflective counterpoint.

Music, conversation, and history in the making ✨

Earlier this month, Alexandre Kantorow took to the stage for the first ever piano recital in the Sohmen Concert Hall, dazzling audiences with works including Bach reimagined by Liszt, Chopin, and Beethoven,
leading to an extended standing ovation following the performance.

He then stayed on for a conversation with Professor of Russian Literature and Music, Philip Ross Bullock, from the University of Oxford.

An unforgettable evening - thank you for joining us. ✨

For two nights only: experience the Schwarzman Centre as you've never seen it before...✨

On 12 & 13 June, theatre renegades Taylor Mac (MacArthur "Genius" Fellow), Matt Ray and Machine Dazzle bring Bark of Millions to Oxford — an electrifying collision of music, drag spectacle and theatrical invention, featuring a powerhouse cast of 16 international artists, including Le Gateau Chocolat and Mama Alto.

Part epic rock opera, part celebration of q***r history and imagination, Bark of Millions invites audiences into a world of original music, incredible costumes, and collective joy.

Every time Bark of Millions is staged, a new song joins the canon; part of a mission to rebalance the American songbook by writing new works that centre q***r voices. The Oxford performances feature the world premiere of the 2026 song.

Join the party. All are welcome. 💫
