I like big mounts and I cannot lie 😆

Had a lot of fun framing this ‘Christ Church cows’ print - I cut all my mounts myself, which can be a faff but also very satisfying when it looks just right! If you feel moo-ved to come and see this one in person, get yourself down to the Oxfordshire's Independent Business Directory & Community makers market at the Up In Arms pub on Marston Road this Sunday (10am-5pm). Lots of brilliant makers, workshops and of course excellent beer and pizza. Hope to see you there!

(The print is also available through my website if you can’t make it!)

New print! Cows on Christ Church Meadow, inspired by seeing them at dawn on a beautiful morning last September. They’re Old English Longhorns, and graze the meadow from April to December. We’re so lucky to have beautiful places like this right in the middle of our city!

I’d initially intended to make the cows more stylised, but I enjoyed drawing them so much that they’ve ended up more realistically represented. So the print has ended up a bit of a mixture of styles, which irks me, but hopefully it’ll enable me to move on and make the print that I really want to make. Colourful, I think, possibly with some of the college buildings in the background. There’s a quote in the book ‘Making Woodblock Prints’ by Merlyn Chesterman and Rod Nelson that I always find comforting when things don’t go exactly as I’d hoped, that says each print is “one more stake in the ground” (swipe through for the full quote). The image exists, and that’s the main thing!

Lots of fun with this brilliant bunch at last week's workshop - and the award for perseverance in the face of adversity goes to Dahlia, who managed to conquer the Colosseum!
Sadly this was my last class at , for the time being anyway. New management are taking over in June and Josh is off on new adventures. I'm so grateful to him, Molly and all the team for always providing such a warm and welcoming place to hold the classes. And especially to who does so much for the art community in East Oxford and beyond!
I am very happy to say that my upcoming classes will be held at the brilliant so fear not, the printmaking will continue! Introductory classes are on 23rd June, 16th Sept, 21st Oct and 18th Nov, and a reduction linocut class is taking place on 13th September, so please book in for that if you'd like to learn to make multi-coloured prints!
A good few people have asked if I would think about running a course, and it's definitely something I would like to do. I've been mulling over what we could cover and I'd love to hear if there's anything in particular that people would want to try out - please let me know in the comments or drop me a message!

I had so many great chats with people about the owls over the weekend at the East Oxford Art Collective's Artweeks exhibition. A lot of people asked how the whole thing had come about (possibly implying that it might be a slightly unusual endeavour to embark upon? 😅) The answer is that I had gone for a sketching session at the Pitt Rivers back in March and had noticed the painted ceramic owl from Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico (top left of the poster). He's at the front of the first display case you encounter on the ground floor of the museum, standing like a small (and somewhat portly) sentry! Next I drew the carved owl from Cameroon (bottom left). I love the contrast between the light that falls on his face and the shadow cast underneath. And then things spiralled from there đŸ€Ł
It's difficult to name a favourite as they all have so much character, but it's probably either the straw owl (a thatched roof decoration from Somerset) or the one above him, a spouted vessel made by the Tewa people of Arizona. Both were pretty challenging to carve (as was the New Mexico owl), but I love how they've turned out.
The poster is now available to buy from my website, or come and grab one during our second Artweeks weekend (we're at Greyfriars church on Iffley Road this coming Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am-4pm).
