At Buckland Abbey NT I explored the maritime embroideries as I descended the staircase. I've been thinking about stitching, typologies, naming and text and these vessels with their balance between the abstract or general and the intensely specific, the particular and in some cases named detail fascinate me. My British Natives needle lace sheep, a typology of 30 endangered breeds each with particular points, details, histories is developing and I've almost finished naming each breed with hand stitched titles. I love seeing how embroiderers of the past tackled text in all its wobbly glory!
