Paul Bohanna Ceramics

Paul Bohanna Ceramics Ceramics Artist Summing up my “expression through ceramics” is something I struggle with, because ceramics are such a huge part of me.

I am a ceramics artist at my very core, with a diverse interaction with ceramics ranging from archaeology, collecting, research, teaching and making. I am deeply interested in the connection ceramics have with our lives, our ideas, our rituals. The infinite canvas they represent, that captures the zeitgeist of each stage of human existence. When we have long gone, ceramics will be the eternal torn pages of our history, all that remains of us. Then let the stars judge our ashes and broken sherds.

So here's another one of my prototype teapots. This is the third one of this type, and either the 5th or 6th teapot I ever made. Hexagonal teapot, slabbed , wheel thrown, extruded, rouletted, and press-moulded. Earthenware with metal oxides and my own lead glaze. Probably available soonish on my website www.paulbohannaceramics.co.uk or contact me directly if interested.
Thank you for looking.

Probably about time I showed some more of the pots I've been making. Here's one of my teapots (I think this is the 7th teapot I made - ever). Slab built with press-moulded and extruded parts. Earthenware glaze with my own method of underglaze decals (my artwork depicts man made microbes...). I call it "The Tea of Life".
It will be up for sale at some point soonish from my website: www.paulbohannaceramics.co.uk or you can try and nab it first by contacting me directly.

Just a quick announcement to say that I've now updated my Pottery Classes booking system on my website. You can now book and start a block of classes at any time during the year and your classes can be taken in either morning or evening classes, or both. You also will not lose classes if you cannot attend every week. The new completely flexible approach now means you can attend every week or fortnight or whatever suits you.
The hours have changed slightly too. All classes are still on Tuesdays, but the morning class now starts at 11:30am. Also all classes have been increased from 2 and 3/4 hours to 3 hours. No price increases for classes but small increase in fired clay charge.
Contact me directly to book classes as the new flexibility is impossible to fit into a 'booking system'.

An earthenware hexagonal teapot with green lead glaze and additional raw metal oxides. Wheel thrown, slab built, extruded, press moulded, stamped and sprigged. The design for this teapot occurred to me many years before I got a chance to make it, this example is the very first one I made. I was experimenting with different clays at the time and therefore this version with a darker body clay will probably be the only one I make in this dark colour, having now settled on lighter coloured clays. My inspiration came partly from the fabulously ornate teapots produced in Staffordshire in the 1750-1780 period.

I regard teapots as the ceramic equivalent of the artist’s canvas, like a three dimensional canvas (that is valid in it’s own right and does not need to emulate a flat painted canvas). I currently make my teapots so that they include all the features of a working teapot (spout, strainer, lid, handle etc.), but they are not intended for brewing tea (they do function but they are lead glazed and therefore not food safe). By making my teapots apparently fully functional and not too far removed from what is easily recognisable as a teapot, I am treading on unsettled ground. If they were deliberately non-functional and exaggerated in form then they would be easier to accept as ceramic art. I enjoy exploring these uncomfortable boundaries that make catagorisation difficult.

"Rhino in a China dish".
This was the first oblong dish with Rococo rim that I made. It has underglaze prints including Albrecht Durer's rhino and three of my sketches for pots. The idea is a play on the popular "Bull in a china shop" saying, except that here I am referencing the near extinction of the Rhino. Albrecht Durer's famous etching of a rhinoceros was apparently done having never actually seen a rhino, I have used it because in many ways it symbolises the first rhino (our first modern contact with rhinos). The rhino is now facing extinction mainly due to China's insatiable appetite for rhino horn, and hence my title "Rhino in a China dish" actually references the end of the rhino. Therefore this dish might also be called "The First and Last Rhino".

The rococo rim was extremely technically challenging to achieve. The slightest difference in moisture level of the body and rim would lead to cracks. The rim alone took many attempts and several hours to make and apply to the body. The dish sits on four hemispherical hollow feet.
