🚨 FOUR OFFICERS. SERIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY.
STV reports that four serving or former Police Scotland officers have been exposed over r**e and serious sexual offending this year.
The outcomes matter:
▪️ Campbell Petrie: 12 years in prison, followed by three years’ extended supervision.
▪️ Cameron Ross: ten years in prison for offences including r**e and domestic abuse.
▪️ Carmichael John Williamson: convicted of three r**es and an offence involving an underage girl; awaiting sentence.
▪️ Alan Greer: died before trial. Police continued investigating serious sexual offending. He was not convicted.
Beyond the headlines, there are documented warning signs demanding scrutiny.
STV reports that Greer’s recruitment vetting team knew about a previous police caution. Petrie was reportedly arrested over threatening behaviour in 2009, the case was dropped, and he later became a sergeant.
⚖️ The public deserves answers:
• What information was available, and when?
• Who assessed the risks?
• What justified recruitment, retention or promotion?
• Were victims’ reports properly investigated?
• Will independent findings and corrective actions be published?
A dropped case does not itself prove misconduct by investigators. But it should never prevent scrutiny of whether safeguarding decisions were sound.
LAWBOX calls for transparent decision records, independent scrutiny and meaningful support for victims. Accountability must examine institutional decisions as well as individual offending.
A police uniform carries public trust. That trust must be earned—and breaches must be confronted.
