"I can't sing."

I've heard that sentence thousands of times.

Usually from people who absolutely can sing.

What they really mean is:

"I don't sound like the people I compare myself to."

And that's a completely different thing.

Most of us aren't comparing ourselves to our friends, colleagues or the person next door.

We're comparing ourselves to professional singers with years of training, recording studios, sound engineers and a few million streams.

It's a bit like saying:

"I can't cook."

When what you really mean is:

"I can't cook like a Michelin-star chef."

When people come to my singing sessions convinced they can't sing, they're often joining in confidently within minutes.

Not because they've suddenly become better singers.

But because they've stopped measuring themselves against impossible standards.

The biggest barrier to singing isn't ability.

It's comparison.

๐ŸŽต Have you ever told yourself you can't sing?

I love our Home Ed groups! ๐ŸŽถ

Only three weeks in, but Wednesday afternoons have already become a highlight of the week. In our small-group sessions, children explore so much more than just piano - music theory, singing, rhythm, improvisation, playing together and even wider topics like opera and the orchestra.

Learning music is always more fun when it's shared! ๐Ÿ˜Š

You don't need talent to do this...

๐ŸŽต Join a choir.
๐ŸŽธ Pick up an instrument.
๐ŸŽน Book your first lesson.
๐Ÿฅ Walk into a music group for the first time.
๐ŸŽค Sing along to your favourite song.
๐Ÿ“ฑ Watch a tutorial.
๐ŸŽถ Ask someone how they got started.
๐Ÿ˜Š Enquire about music classes in your area.

They just need a first step.

Somewhere along the way, people often look at accomplished musicians and think, "They're so talented."

But what we don't see are the hundreds of hours spent practising, making mistakes, trying again, feeling frustrated, improving little by little and refusing to give up.

What many people call talent is often the visible result of years of learning, persistence and hard work.

Of course, natural ability can help. But it's rarely the biggest factor in whether someone becomes a great musician.

The biggest factor?

Showing up.

Again and again.

So if you've always dreamed of singing, playing an instrument, performing, writing songs or simply making music for fun, don't wait until you feel "talented enough."

You don't need talent to take the first step.

You just need the courage to begin.

Thank you to Creative Wakefield for inviting me to talk about the wellbeing benefits of singing in the workplace.

Of course, I had to let people experience it for themselves so we learnt a three part version of We Will Rock you in less than 10 minutes!

We hear a lot about loneliness these days. What we don't hear enough about isย belonging.

Being part of a choir is about so much more than singing. It's about making friends, sharing experiences, having a laugh together and feeling part of a community.

Week after week, people come together with a common purpose and leave with something much bigger than a song learned or a performance prepared. They leave with connections.

That's why we're passionate about our adult choirs at Fanfare Music - and why we're so excited to be launching a choir for children soon too!

Whether you're 8 or 80, there's something special about raising your voice alongside others and being part of something bigger than yourself.

If you've ever thought about joining a choir, or if you know a child who loves to sing, we'd love to hear from you.

๐ŸŽต Music brings people together.
โค๏ธ Community keeps them coming back.
