Millgate Arts Centre is home to a thriving local arts community, providing a base for theatre, film, and chamber concert societies, as well as holding art exhibitions and being available for business or personal lettings. The Centre is home to Saddleworth Players, a theatre group which runs five week-long plays each year, Saddleworth Concerts Society which organises touring concerts from across th

e UK and Europe and Saddleworth Film Society, a members' film group, which shows a mix of independent, foreign and stand-out films each year and Saddleworth Live which brings visiting professional theatre companies and performers to the Millgate Arts Centre. The centre has undergone extensive work in recent years to maintain the building - one of the key landmarks in the Delph conservation area, which makes it a beautiful setting for incoming performers or business users. With the installation of new facilities in the theatre including projection equipment for presentations, the centre is well suited for adult learning, youth groups, advice service, rehearsal space, library events and community meetings. The theatre facilities will continue to be available as a performance space for outside organisations.

The Saddleworth Constable by Martin Paul Roche is the first play of the season by Saddleworth Players and has started rehearsal on the stage in Delph.

‘The Saddleworth Constable’ is a simple, light hearted story about rediscovering the life you need, the love you deserve and the home you never lost… and leaving well alone which county you’re in. Oh, and cheese and onion crisps.”

Sandy is an artist who has fallen out of love with art but more specifically, her own. Steve is the retired local policeman who has recently discovered art having fallen out of love with life. When Sandy returns to her Saddleworth roots, she has no plans other than to get some respite from her fast-paced life; to make space and certainly not to make connections.
But a slow-paced life can sometimes be just as challenging because when you slow it down, the blurs are soon replaced with the sharply focussed reality of the life that’s been passing you by.
In returning to her roots, Sandy discovers, hiding within the blurs, a sardonic, eccentric, but deeply private man who does not appreciate what he has to offer to the world and her. In stumbling across each other they also rediscover two things we all need; a passion and a purpose.

In summer 2026 we will go dark to complete some structural repair to the internal wall of the bar to provide damp proofing against the Saddleworth weather and replace the stairs as preparation for exciting work in 2027.

We’re delighted to announce that Millgate Arts Centre has been funded by Oldham Council, working with Action Together , who has set up the Community Regeneration Partnership Capital Grants Programme as part of Oldham’s Levelling Up agreement with the government.
This funding will support the sector’s resilience to enable VCFSE organisations and Parish Councils that are locally rooted and active in Oldham to contribute to the delivery of the Oldham Plan – Our Future Oldham, a Shared Vision for 2030 and Oldham’s District Priorities.

The funding for this grant is provided by Oldham Council, working in collaboration with Action Together.

Millgate Arts Centre are delighted to announce the next two phases of ‘Building the Future’. We have already completed phase 1 have had some amazing support from generous donors to continue to improve our community theatre.

Phase 1: summer 2025
We rebuilt the iconic front of the building that was falling down, we replaced rotten joints and floorboards on the stage and improved the insulation, heating and electrical wiring behind the curtain, and added new LED lighting to improve the shows.
This was possible through generous support from

• Theatre Trust / Linsbury Trust
• Roger Tanner Foundation
• The Saddleworth Festival Fund
… and individual donations from Friends and others…

2. We also will install new black stage drapes that will give us a better and more flexible stage facility.
Phase 3: summer 2027
We will develop the bar to create a flexible space that will act as a bar and studio theatre: Flexible studio theatre space for 60 audience members, new bar, new kitchen, installation of a lift to improve access for audience members and rebuild the front 4 rows of the main auditorium to move entrances to the side.
This third phase has been possible through a generous grant from the Antony J Adler Trust.
Antony John Adler (Tony) wore many hats throughout his life. Giving something back was a clear theme within everything he did. But it was within local theatre that he devoted so much time, service and of himself. Tony died in 2015 aged 81 after a brief illness. He had ensured that his estate would be his legacy and would continue to help others.
Even now, several years after his death, he has through the work of his dedicated trustees ensured a legacy for his beloved world of theatre – and much more. It is fitting that his generosity will allow future generations to appreciate and share his passion for it. And Millgate Arts Centre are proud that their new studio theatre-bar will bear his name.
