One of the biggest confusions we see most days, are people asking "should we add more weight?"......so here's what we think....
Once you have been following a fitness programme for a certain length of time, you will get to a point where you will no longer be making progress, what we call a fitness plateau. This is when it's time to decide if to add more weight, or simply increase the reps, speed, and variations.
While being able to lift heavier weights can feel like an amazing achievement, it's also comes with more risk of injury as your form tends to break down, so always make sure your technique is good.
If you find your losing your form then its best to drop the weight and up the reps. When you lift lighter weight for more reps you are getting stronger and developing muscular endurance. We followed a study which found that the higher rep, lower weight lifters had increased hypertrophy (more muscle building activity)
The one downside is your workouts are going to take longer, so maybe you could try to mix it up by one workout more reps less weight and the next one more weight less reps. This technique is known as periodization training.
There's no right or wrong, it's personal preference and what your personal goals are, but doing this certainly keeps you more motivated, decreases your risk of injury and helps you continue your fitness AND strength.
