Derrick - 50 years of song

A milestone was celebrated at rehearsal this week. Derrick Gray has sung with the Hart Male Voice Choir for 50 years. In that time he has sung in every section from top tenor to bass and has now settled as a key member of the baritones.

Derrick was presented with an Honorary Life Membership certificate to recognise his service and a rack of wine to celebrate. Several wives, friends and retired choristers came along to add their congratulations to those of the current choir.

Wearing his original choir blazer, Derrick quipped ‘50 years of miming and not being caught’. Derrick, you’re a great example of how singing and the camaraderie of a choir is good for you. Many congratulations!

Great concert last Saturday singing in aid of the Hale Community and Youth Centre in the Spire Church in Farnham. A large and enthusiastic audience enjoyed a wide range of songs and the beautiful violin playing of Musical Director, Emily Hinchliff.

We were joined by the Centre’s ‘Sing for Joy’ choir for our last piece. A lot of fun for everyone.

Mike’s Momentous Milestone

We had a special celebration this week. Mike Morgan has been with the Choir for 40 years. To mark this significant achievement, Mike was presented with his 40 year service pin and a specially engraved glass tankard by Chairman, Eamonn O’Rourke.

In his 40 years Mike has made a massive contribution. From performing solos, through serving as Chairman for three separate terms, being stand in conductor when required, to being a key part of the tenor section, both as its leader and a strong performer, showing by example what it means to be part of HMVC, Mike continues to make an impact.

We took a break from rehearsal to salute Mike and make the presentation then raised a glass to him and thanked him for all he has done and continues to do.

Mike’s wife, Judith, recently retired as accompanist to the Choir, and his son, Mark, joined us for the celebration.

It was a busy rehearsal this week as, alongside practicing new songs and some of our established repertoire, we saluted a long-serving member of the choir and, sadly, said goodbye to another.

Danny Mulhern was presented with his 35 year pin as well as his 30 year commemorative glass mug. This should have happened during covid but was overlooked in the hurly-burly of that time. A stalwart of the bass section, Danny was given a rousing cheer and round of applause in recognition of his contribution to the choir, both at concerts, rehearsals and social activities.

We also celebrated the contribution of another of our basses, Peter Newman. Sadly, after 17 years with the choir, Peter has decided to lay down his musical scores. He was given a commemorative plaque showing the Hart Male Voice Choir crest and Carole, his wife, was presented with flowers by Chairman Eamonn O’Rourke. The contribution made by the support of wives and partners of choristers is immense and never taken for granted.

We then broke early to enjoy wine and nibbles very kindly provided by Peter and Carole.

Easter: a time for new beginnings. Start something new and join a choir!

Easter is a time of renewal and hope, an opportunity to reflect, spend time with family and friends and to start something afresh as well as eating chocolate! Singing in a choir has been shown to improve wellbeing and mental health through improved lung capacity, posture and good companionship.

If you’ve ever sung or though about singing, why not give the Hart Male Voice Choir a try? Come along for a few sessions with no commitment and make some new friends. Call David Lewis on 07792 754738 or email [email protected] for more details.

Where is Samba the capybara?

Missing from Marwell zoo since 17 March Samba has been spotted several times in different places but eludes capture. It’s rumoured that she even appeared with the Hart Male Voice Choir. Evidence has been provided but questions are being asked!

You can give singing with the choir a go too. Just come along to the Cross Barn in Odiham on a Wednesday evening at 7.30 pm for a friendly welcome, good companionship and a beer afterwards. Just call David Lewis on 07792 754738 or email [email protected] to book a place.

Great concert earlier this week at St Joseph’s in Aldershot, a lovely Grade II listed church. We appeared with the St Joseph’s Primary School Choir and they were fantastic! Full of energy and totally charming, as you might expect from a school regularly rated outstanding by Ofsted. Both choirs sang some pieces individually and some as a combined choir. Listen to the clip of “Fix You” by Coldplay to get a feel for the energy.

As well as good singing, we enjoyed the playing of ‘Londonderry Air’ from Daniel, an ex-pupil of St Joseph’s school, on the cello and our own Emily Hinchliff on violin. Beautiful.

There wasn’t a spare seat in the pews and much needed funds were raised for both the school and the church.

The children wrote lovely letters to the choir saying how much they had enjoyed singing with us. Here are a few extracts.

“You sounded absolutely amazing especially the Mermaid song. It was cool and you did those dips while you sang”

“You inspired me to continue singing when I am older, because no matter how old you are, singing never gets old”

“Thank you for singing with us. You are all very talented and you should all be proud”

“We were astonished by the noise you made. Thank you for giving up your time to sing with us”

“Thank you for singing those Irish songs. My Mum was in tears!”

“My favourite part was when we all sang together. Happy St Patrick’s Day and Happy Easter!”

It is 12 months since we said goodbye to Norman ‘Norrie’ Bartlett, the long-serving Father of the Choir, who passed away last year a week short of his 99th birthday. Norman loved the song ‘Fields of Athenry’ and often sang the solo part. At our concert tonight, in St Joseph’s Church Aldershot, our rendition of the song will be dedicated to the memory of Norman.

Norrie joined the Royal Navy aged 16 and served on Atlantic and Arctic destroyer convoy escorts. He was involved in the D Day landings and was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered.
