Nunthorpe Players Currently children under 8 are not accepted for on-stage roles. A group of people who come together to put on plays as a team, we are all learning together.

An amateur dramatic group for adults and young people, we put on one pantomime (including parts for children and young people) and two plays (usually for adults but sometimes with parts for children/young people) annually. We don't offer formal training sessions for children (or adults) but everyone is welcome to have a go.

Below is a brief character description to help you decide who you would like to audition for.
We are playing with the idea of gender roles in this play and possibly having all the household staff and the supporting constable played by women, then the higher-class characters played by men with Clarissa and Pippa being the central excentric yet grounded females in the middle of the drama.
This obviously all depends on who comes to audition so the below is just an initial idea …… if a 60 year old man would like to audition for Pippa and nails the role, we will remain open minded.

Family:
Clarissa Hailsham-Brown: (Female, 30’s plus) Clarissa is extroverted, flirtatious, witty and clever. She likes to wrap men around her finger and be the centre of attention. The titular Spider in the centre of a web of her own creating. Loves her stepdaughter fiercely so should have great chemistry with whoever plays Pippa, but also have good chemistry with all the men as they do all love her…… and she loves that they love her!

Henry Hailsham-Brown: (Male 30s-40s) Clarissa’s sensible, diplomatic husband who works for the Foreign Office. Henry is well-spoken and enjoys Clarissa’s eccentricities (to a certain extent) he is a very busy and important man.

Pippa Hailsham-Brown: (Female teens) Pippa is Henry’s birth daughter and Clarissa’s step daughter. She loves living with Clarissa and Henry and has a complicated relationship with her birth mother who she does not want to live with. Pippa is very curious and loves to learn. She is confident when talking around adults and does not feel inferior by her age or gender. Pippa is carrying a lot of emotional trauma from her experiences with her mother so can become emotional and heightened.

Sir Rowland Delahaye / Dame Delahaye : (Male / female - 50s) Clarissa’s former guardian. This is a well-spoken, distinguished person and speaks as the voice of reason but will protect their ward (Clarissa) at any cost.

Jeremy Warrender: (Male 30s) Jermey is a young bachelor who is smitten with Clarissa. They share a flirtatious scene with a lot of romantic tension that is real for Jeremy but all part of Clarissa’s game.

Hugo Birch: (Male 40s-50s) A friend of Sir/Dame Delahaye, partaking in drinking port and playing golf. He is easily agitated and flustered.

Oliver Costello: (Male 30s-40s) New partner of Henry’s ex-wife. Oliver is a sleazy drug dealer. He threatens Clarissa that he will take Pippa away from them, all the while searching the house for…….something.

Lord Inspector: (Male or Female 40s) The inspector is a wry and calculating police detective. The inspector provides a blend of suspense and humour as they try to decipher this web of lies.

Constable Jones: (Male or Female 20’s-30s) Jones is the supporting constable to the inspector. Jones’ has a strong regional accent to contrast with the rather well-spoken inspector. This is more of a supporting role with a lot of room for reactional comedy.

Miss Peak: (Female 40s-50s) Miss Peak is the eccentric gardener. She has a strong regional accent (maybe west country) she is hearty and rather blunt and strong.

Elgin: (Male / Female 40s-50s) Elgin is the butler who overhears important information on the case. Could also be played as a female housekeeper.

One year ago, we took a leap of faith and held our very first Youth Theatre taster session... and what an incredible year it's been! ❤️✨

Since that day, so many talented, passionate young people have joined us, and together we've become so much more than a theatre group – we've become a family. 🎭

Over the past year we've held many fun and inspiring youth sessions, escape rooms, team-building days, workshops, and activities that have brought everyone closer together. We've watched friendships blossom, confidence grow, and talent shine. 🌟

We've also staged our fantastic production of ‘Curtain Up’, which was a huge success and is still talked about by our young performers today! So many of our members also took part in ‘Charlie and the Choco Lotta Factory’, and we've had the privilege of performing for a local care home, sharing the joy of theatre with our community. 💛

Looking back, it's amazing to see how much we've achieved in just one year. What started as a leap of faith has become a thriving, supportive, and talented Youth Theatre family, and we couldn't be prouder of every single young person who has been part of the journey.

And we're only just getting started! 🎉 We have so many exciting plans, opportunities, performances, and adventures ahead, and we can't wait to see what the next year brings. Here's to celebrating an incredible first year and to all the exciting things still to come! ❤️✨🎭
