Scotland’s Most Iconic Horse Sculptures 🐎
Almost everyone visiting Scotland makes a stop here for a photo and it’s easy to see why. The Kelpies are two magnificent horse heads, with one gazing towards the sky and the other towards the ground.
According to ancient Scottish folklore, a Kelpie was a supernatural water horse believed to lure people onto its back before dragging them into the water and killing them. Stories like this were traditionally told to children to keep them away from rivers, lochs and other dangerous waters.🤞
But that’s not the whole story behind The Kelpies. Andy Scott, the artist who created them, explains that the sculptures also celebrate Scotland’s deep historical relationship with horses. Horses played an essential role in farming, transporting goods, pulling canal barges and wagons, and supporting Scotland’s industrial development.
The Kelpies therefore represent both Scottish folklore and the centuries old bond between people and horses.🤝
