Holst’s The Planets comes to Nottingham as talented musicians from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University join forces with the BBC Concert Orchestra under the baton of Chief Conductor Anna-Maria Helsing.

The concert opens with Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture, conducted by University of Nottingham conductor Harry Lai.

This concert shines a light on prodigious voices across centuries:

F***y Mendelssohn’s sparkling Overture — her only purely orchestral work, unpublished in her lifetime
Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 1, performed by second-year soloist Chiara Ponticos — a piece originally written for 15-year-old virtuoso Pablo Sarasate
Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1 — composed when he was just 15, and premiered at his sister F***y’s birthday
Conducted by Harry Lai, this program is a tribute to music that defies age and time.

The University Choir and Chamber Choir open the academic year with a breathtaking celebration of four centuries of British choral music.

This concert features works ranging from the expressive beauty of Henry Purcell to the vibrant contemporary voice of Nottingham-born Judith Bingham, whose contributions to choral repertoire are widely celebrated.

A highlight of the evening is Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, written to Christopher Smart’s witty and eccentric text Jubilate Agno — a joyful celebration of the divine in all things.

The University Philharmonia is joined by internationally renowned guitarist Xuefei Yang performing a world premiere of a Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra composed by Chen Yi which Lakeside Arts has commissioned especially for this concert. The concert is taking place on Saturday 24th February at the Albert Hall, Nottingham.
