Tony Britton, who died in December 2019 at the age of 93, was equally adept in both television comedies and motion pictures.

He starred in ‘Don’t Wait Up’ and ‘Robin’s Nest’, and also enjoyed a long career in film and on the stage. My cousin. who works in Hospital Radio, interviewed him when he was playing Sir Thomas More on stage in "A man for all seasons" and found him to be a most charming and engaging individual.

He appeared in numerous British films from the 1950s onwards, including Operation Amsterdam (1960), Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and The Day of the Jackal (1973). Britton won the Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Actor and was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 1975 for The Nearly Man.

He was the subject of This Is Your Life in 1977 when he was surprised by Eamonn Andrews outside London's Cafe Royal.

In 1979, Britton was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady at the Adelphi Theatre.

From 1983 to 1990, he starred with Nigel Havers and Dinah Sheridan in the BBC sitcom Don't Wait Up, which became a highlight of his career. His other sitcom appearances included ...And Mother Makes Five, Father, Dear Father and as James Nicholls in Robin's Nest. Britton recorded many audiobook versions of novels by Dick Francis.

In September 2013 Sir Jonathan Miller directed a Gala Performance of William Shakespeare's King Lear at the Old Vic in London. Britton played the Earl of Gloucester

Gerald Harper, now 93, became a household name in the BBC cult classic Adam Adamant Lives! a dramatic all-action fantasy series about a flambouyant Victorian who is frozen in a block of ice and then thawed out in the 1960s.

In his mid thirties by the time he achieved nationwide recognition in the UK, he had previously filmed supporting roles in a host of classic British movies like “The Dam Busters (1955), The Admirable Crichton (1957), “A Night to Remember” (1958), The League of Gentlemen (1960) and Tunes of Glory (1960). In between filming assignments – as throughout his entire career – he would always return to his first love, the theatre.

Although originally intending to train as a doctor, he became interested in acting while still at school, eventually attending RADA upon completion of his National Service. His theatrical career began with a series of one-act plays by Bernard Shaw at the Arts Theatre, before starring opposite Frankie Howerd in 'Charley's Aunt'. He later spent two years with the Old Vic Company, touring America and appearing on Broadway.

After Adam Adamant, he would consolidate his success as the lead character in the ITV series “Hadleigh,” which ran for seven years between 1969 and 1976. His character inherits a mansion and a considerable fortune but soon tires of the sedate lifestyle of a country squire and finds himself torn between his passion for risky adventure and beautiful women, and his love for his new country estate. I would expect Talking Pictures to screen the entire series before too long but in the meantime, it is well represented on YouTube.

Between theatre engagements, Harper would subsequently embark upon a a second career as a disc jockey, famously giving away champagne and chocolates to favoured listeners on his Radio 2 'Saturday afternoon selection'show. He would also enjoy a stint broadcasting on Capital Radio presenting the “Sunday Affair.”

The Texan born actress/model Gayle Hunnicutt passed away in August 2023 at the age of 80.

As an up-and-coming starlet in Hollywood she was often cast for her stunning beauty. Then, after marrying the British actor David Hemmings, she moved to the UK, where she played big parts in two major television series, The Golden Bowl (1972) and Fall of Eagles (1974).

Throughout the rest of her life, she would alternate between the UK and the States on work assignments.

When her marriage to Hemmings broke up in the mid-1970s, she decided to remain in Britain and “its wonderful, wonderful theatres”. She was cast in Twelfth Night at Greenwich, The Tempest at Oxford, A Woman of No Importance at Chichester and JM Barrie’s The Admirable Crichton, also at Greenwich. In 1979 she became the first American actress to play Peter Pan in the West End.

In the late 1980s millions saw her make a splash on British television as JR Ewing’s old flame, an English countess called Vanessa Beaumont, in the glitzy American soap "Dallas."

Over ninety film credits to his name, Thomas Newman is a certifiable legend in the world of cinematic composition and one of the living members of the Newman Family music dynasty.

He's one of my favourite composers with a CV to die for; "The Lost Boys," "The Shawshank Redemption," "American Beauty," "The Green Mile," "The Adjustment Bureau", "Meet Joe Black", the series "Castle Rock," and the James Bond films "Skyfall" and "Spectre" are just scratching the surface of films graced by Newman's musical stylings. He can do it all, because he's done it all, and there are no signs he's slowing down.

By his own admission, he has genres that excite him more than others. In a 2023 interview to promote his score for Pixar's "Elemental", he was moved to say , "I mean, I like psychological drama. There's something wonderful about writing a score that's maybe 25 minutes and that there's no music for 15 minutes and suddenly music comes in. It really elevates and then it goes away. And that it's not turning every corner. But a lot of the movies I've done recently, I guess, have been essential to write larger scores. Some of the Bond movies that I've done and obviously animation really require a lot more music, and I love that, too. So I mean, I don't know that there's any genre that I prefer. What I always want to do is work on a movie that I find interesting and that I can be expressive and feel like there's going to be some joy in the making."

My first recollection of seeing Maggie O'Neill was in the 1997 BBC Drama "The Fix". It told the story of the British betting scandal of 1964, following which a number of British professional footballers were jailed and banned from football for life for conspiring to fix the results of matches. Prominent among those gaoled and banned were the Sheffield Wednesday F.C. stars Peter Swan, Tony Kay and David Layne. O'Neill played the part of Marina kay, Tony's wife.

She'd already been active in film and tv for just over a decade by then and in the ensuing years, has accumulated a considerable body of work including guest slots in "Peak Practice", "Call the Midwife", Father Brown", "Inspector Morse", "Midsomer Murders". "The Royal", "New Tricks" and "Inspector George Gently".

Equally adapt at both sympathetic and disagreeable characterisations, she turned in a tour-de-force performance in "East Enders" playing Suzy Branning for six months in 2008. Whatever my opinion of this long running BBC series (and it would require expletives that are still to be invented to explain it) it was reassuring to read that she didn't get along with the cast.

Maggie lives a tranquil existence and keeps many facts to herself. The modest actress said in a 2012 interview that she had a long-term lover, “David, a cinematographer,” with whom she was unmarried.

She keeps pretty much to herself, whilst admitting that she has never felt any great urge to get married. ” I want to be devoted to my spouse, " she stated in a 2012 interview "but I don’t want to have a substantial religious ceremony or wear a ring on my finger.”

Now 61, she's unlikely to change her views at this late stage, Whilst childless, she does come from a large family comprised of approximately 60 nieces and nephews. As to the present state of her private life, it is frankly none of lour business.
