✨Did you know, a pet portrait starts long before I sit at my easel?

A lot goes on behind the scenes before any pastel even touches the paper! 😯

It starts with client consultation, obtaining the right reference photo, and that can involve lots of trial and error! I’m looking at the light and shade, colours, and all the tiny details I’ll need to capture the pet's character.

Then there’s preparing the photo, working out the best size and composition, deciding exactly where the pet will sit within the portrait, and working with my client to choose the background and frame colours that will best complement their pet. 🤔

I’ll often make mock-ups to compare different combinations, before making a final decision.

Once I’m happy, I'll print off a copy of the chosen image to refer to, although I use my tablet as my main reference, as it gives me a much more accurate representation of the colours.

Only then am I ready to sit at my easel and start the part you get to see! 😊

Oh and the image is an avatar - despite telling it not to, AI decided to make me slimmer and younger!! - I guess I can live with that!🤣

The high quality art paper I use comes in several colours. As the paper needs to complement both your pet and the frame, choosing can be a little overwhelming. To keep things simple, I tend to offer a choice of two colours which I feel will create the most beautiful overall result.

When commissioning a pet portrait, I will ask your preference for the frame and background colours.

If you don't need to match these to existing frames or home décor, please allow me to guide you, as the background and frame colours work together and can make a huge difference to the overall look and feel of your finished portrait - as demonstrated below!😊

Lexi’s story 🐴

After the sale of her previous pony Chloe, Lexi's owner, felt completely lost without a horse, so the search for a new mount began. As soon as Chloe spotted Lexi’s advert, she wasted no time in going to meet her.

When she first saw her, Chloe wasn’t sure — she hadn’t really wanted another mare! But after riding her and spending the whole day with her, she fell in love and knew she was the right horse for sure.❤️

Once Lexi had settled in with her new owner, they enjoyed lots of show jumping and hacking together. Then, in October last year, Chloe had a fall from Lexi which left her unable to ride for a few months. During that time, she had Lexi checked over and discovered she had very sore and tight muscles in her back and chest, so physio was arranged for her. In a way, Chloe and Lexi ended up going through their respective recoveries together!

Now they're back doing all the things they both love, especially jumping and hacking. Lexi is 14.2hh, 8 years old and rather partial to treats — Stud Muffins are her favourite! Chloe says Lexi can be very opinionated and cheeky at times, but she's a very sweet girl and Chloe wouldn’t change her for the world. ❤️

I've been glued to my easel this weekend, so another pet portrait finished - and safely under wraps! 🎄🐾

This one is a Christmas present and the person receiving it has absolutely no idea it's been commissioned for them, so I can't share until the secret is finally out. 😊

This simple white frame was just right for Lexi — letting the eye take in the whole portrait, undistracted.

Remember that rather magnificent long nose? 🐴❤️

Well, Lexi's portrait is now finished! I’ve really loved capturing this beautiful girl in pastel, and that muzzle was such fun to work on.

Here she is, fresh off my easel . . . 🥰

🐾 CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT BOOKINGS ARE NOW FULL! 🐾

A huge thank you to everyone who has booked a pet portrait with me. My pre-Christmas diary has now reached full capacity, so I’m unable to guarantee any further portraits will be completed in time for Christmas.

But if you were hoping to give a pet portrait as a Christmas present, don’t panic!

You can still join my waiting list now - for a portrait in the New Year. Booking now, means you'll be amongst the first in line straight after Christmas.

Or, you may prefer to give one of my Pet Portrait Gift Vouchers instead? 🎁 The recipient will have something lovely to open on Christmas Day and can then choose the photograph they'd most like me to capture for them.

Thank you so much for keeping my easel busy! 🐾❤️
