Today members of Broadland Chess Club travelled to Bury St Edmunds to take part in the East Anglian Chess Union club chess championship. We entered 2 teams, and won in the Open section with Jason Leverett, Roy Hughes, Martin Walker, and Jaden Jermy. The photo shows John Wickham presenting the prize and Shield to young Ollie Nichols who played in the second team with his Dad Rob, Heather Walker and Christina Casti.

Broadland Chess Club will be launching an afternoon casual chess club between the hours of 2:30pm and 4:30pm on a Monday from 2nd March 2026 in the Torben Room at the Viking Centre on Tills Road Sprowston NR6 7QZ.

All players welcome, there will be a small weekly charge of £2 to cover room hire costs.

Next door to the Torben Room the café, Longboats and Lattes, will be open to serve teas, coffees and cakes to enjoy whilst playing your games.

Each competitor received a medal and a certificate, first place in each age range received a trophy, top three places received a financial prize. Others received a book prize for achievement.

Broadland Chess Club Junior Tournament 14th February 2026

Today we proudly held our first ever Junior Chess Tournament at The Viking Centre in Sprowston.

40 keen competitors entered aged between 6 and 16 years old, some of whom have only been playing chess for a year and this was their very first experience of competition.

Everyone who participated were an absolute joy to work with and were very well behaved, respectful to both their opponents and to the organisers, so a huge thank you to them.

Our ever-popular free chess webinars resume soon with a series of four free sessions aimed at children aged 8-13 who know the basic rules of chess and are ready to take the next steps in their learning.

Last term many hundreds of children enjoyed this programme and we’re sure the latest installments will be no different.

The sessions will take place on Mondays, 5.00 - 6.00 p.m., starting on Monday 19th January, and will cover topics such as checkmates, captures, openings and tactics. They’ll also give children some ideas as to how they can improve their chess in their own time using platforms such as ChessKid.
