It may be September, but The Box Of Delights is already bringing magic to the theatre! ✨

Here is our first meeting with Tiny Kay, made for us by Karen Davies (pictured). The magic Box of Delights has a special k**b - when you turn it one way you can 'go swift' and the other way you can 'go small'. This is Kay when he 'goes small'. These aren't the clothes he'll be wearing: Amanda will be making a small version of the costume that the actor will be wearing when he's full size - apart from the boots which are being 3D printed (which is why he hasn't got any feet yet!). He'll have a different head as well - modelled from the actor who will be playing the full sized version. The head he's wearing at the moment was based on Devin Stanfield who played Kay in the cult 1980s BBC series (and who comes from Norwich).

“This play is riveting. It’s lengthy and wordy but the acting is of such high quality and the pace of the staging moves along at such a lick that time does not drag. There are so many lines that are quotable that I want to read the text.

As a member of the audience you are constantly placed in the position of thinking ‘what would I have done?’ when witnessing the agonising moral dilemma faced by Reith. To see a younger Churchill portrayed casts an interesting light on what he was to become and the interplay between the two is tense.

This ensemble cast strongly and skilfully support the two protagonists in a setting that added a new dimension to the Maddermarket stage. Jolly Good Show!”

When Winston Went To War With The Wireless opens tonight! ✨

It is 1926. The General Strike is in full swing. 1.7 million workers have walked off the job, bringing the country to a standstill. John Reith has built an institution - the BBC. Winston Churchill wants a weapon. Jack Thorne (This is England, His Dark Materials, Adolescence) has written a fascinating and incredibly entertaining play exploring their standoff during the strike.
