Step into the world of You Rang, My Lord? as it makes its UK stage premiere, faithfully adapted from Series One of the much-loved BBC comedy created by Jimmy Perry and David Croft.
This new stage version, adapted by Roy Gould and Penny Croft, brings to life the early episodes that introduced audiences to the world of Meldrum House—where class, duty, and deception shape everyday life above and below stairs.
During the First World War, private soldiers Alf Stokes and James Twelvetrees save the life of officer Teddy Meldrum, forging a bond of lasting gratitude that will echo years later. By 1927, James is working as a footman in the household of Lord George Meldrum, Teddy’s older brother, and is hopeful of securing the long-awaited vacancy for butler.
However, Alf Stokes—once a butler himself—and his daughter Ivy re-enter the household after losing their work as music hall performers. With Teddy’s influence and a set of dubious references obtained through blackmail, Alf unexpectedly secures the position of butler, much to James’s frustration. Ivy is taken on as a maid, though Alf keeps their connection hidden, leading her to adopt her mother’s maiden name, Teasdale, within the household.
As tensions rise above stairs, Lord George becomes increasingly uneasy when anonymous vandalism appears—most notably the word “Fornicator” painted on the side of his car—adding to the growing sense that order within Meldrum House is beginning to unravel.
Set in the 1920s, the story follows the household as secrets surface and relationships become increasingly complicated. Staff and family alike navigate misunderstandings, divided loyalties, and hidden pasts, all while maintaining the rigid structures of class and service.
Featuring characters such as Teddy, Ivy, James, and Alf alongside the established household, this adaptation stays close to the source material, offering a clear and authentic retelling of the opening chapter of the series.
This production presents a straightforward and respectful interpretation of a well-known British classic, providing audiences with the opportunity to experience the original story live on stage.
