On the first Sunday in February, you are warmly invited to the annual Grimaldi Clown Church Service at All Saints Church, Haggerston, London — a truly unique event where laughter, remembrance, and community take centre stage.
This special service honours Joseph Grimaldi (1778–1837), widely regarded as the father of modern clowning. Grimaldi transformed clowning from simple slapstick into an art of character, costume, and comic storytelling. His influence still pops up everywhere — from circus rings to theatre stages, and even sneaks into modern comedy and entertainment. You might say his legacy still gets excellent press.
The service is held at All Saints Church, Grimaldi’s parish church and final resting place. Each year, clowns from across the country gather in full costume for a respectful yet joyful celebration of Grimaldi’s life, followed by a traditional church service that welcomes everyone — clown and non-clown alike.
Clowning thrives on connection, community, and shared joy, and it needs everyone’s support to stay in the headlines for the right reasons. Whether you come as a spectator, supporter, or simply curious reader of life’s small print, it’s a wonderful excuse to step away from the usual news cycle and enjoy something genuinely uplifting.
Expect colour, character, reflection, and a few well-timed punchlines — proof that even in a serious world, there’s always room for a little fun with the words media.
We’d love to see you there.
