Anglia Square update:
We understand people have been concerned about recent social media images from the Anglia Square site, and we want to help answer some common questions. Safety has been our priority throughout the demolition process and continues to be.
Thorough asbestos surveys were completed before demolition began, and any asbestos identified was removed in line with strict regulations. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has previously confirmed that inspectors visited the site during the asbestos removal phase and that asbestos was removed by a licensed contractor ahead of demolition.
The pipework shown online carried historic warning labels. These do not, on their own, indicate that asbestos is present and can remain in place even after asbestos has been safely removed.
For reassurance, a further sample was taken from the pipe lagging shown and tested by a UKAS‑accredited laboratory on Tuesday. The results, confirmed on Wednesday, showed no asbestos was detected.
The Health and Safety Executive has also confirmed it liaised with contractors as a precaution, that samples were analysed, and that no asbestos was found. No immediate regulatory concerns have been raised.
For anyone who would like more detail, we’ve shared the latest laboratory test report on our website with our previous update, which confirms the findings outlined above. Link in comments.
We will continue to put safety first and keep residents and businesses informed as work progresses.
