An exhibition of wall-based ceramics in The Noverre Corridor, The Assembly House, Theatre Street, Norwich NR2 1RQ

Mark Scott-Wood and Matthew Richardson share a passion for exploring and experimenting with the unpredictability of clay as a material, producing objects that are built, slip-cast, folded, extruded, thrown, impressed, assembled or woven. The pieces in this exhibition are traces of a process but also manifest as objects of mystery that hover between the mystical and mundane, the familiar and unfamiliar and the purposeful and playful.

The exhibition provided an opportunity for the artists to explore crossovers in their practices through a shared material - clay -  and also their interests around ideas connected to superstition, myth, folk, archaeology and ritual.  Both artists are interested in the way objects might be re-purposed to become significant and charged with new meaning. The pieces often reference architectural or natural structures, but are ambiguous and seem to drift across time, like past or future relics. They might be timepieces or tools, plans or diagrams, talismans or signs, or objects for contemplation.

This May, the ballroom of The Assembly House will once again become the Noverre Cinema after closing its doors in 1992. What films do you remember seeing at the Noverre Cinema?

The Assembly House Trust are working with the Norwich-based Reel Connections to revive one of Norwich’s long-lost cinemas for three special screenings this summer. More information on the films, dates, and times will be announced soon via and !

The Noverre Cinema
For more than 40 years, the Noverre served as a popular city cinema which screened a diverse range of films including non-commercial and arthouse releases. Located in a former ballroom at the Assembly House in Norwich, the cinema took its name from the Noverre family who taught classical dance there during the 18th Century. The Noverre is fondly remembered for its Saturday morning kids’ club, seating with plenty of leg room, showing no adverts before films and for not selling ice creams or popcorn. The most popular film it screened was Cabaret, which was shown on 11 different occasions.

Assembly House Trust

Simon Newby, on until 16 Jan, open daily.

manipulates modular objects and materials to create works that play with pattern and movement within two and three-dimensional spaces. Diverse materials are altered or concealed, triggering new ambiguous surfaces and forms.
Underpinned by a haphazard linearity, his sculptures have been imagined as drawings in space. In these fleeting sketches, once functional objects and materials slip between the rational and ridiculous, in various states of completion. They begin to offer up a visually enticing logic of their own, which is awkward, unsettling and usually quite funny.

Today from 1–4PM
A Free Short Film Screening at The Assembly House

‘Haukebodde Hacoud Hacwod Aukud’ is a new film by the Norwich based artist Anna Brass. The film is 15mins and will run twice an hour at o’clock and half past.

Set in late medieval Italy and Essex, Anna Brass’ short film explores earthly bodies and celestial realms. Brass draws on a diverse array of imagery to depict a world populated with strange objects: an oversized pilgrim badge, talking maiolica pots, and a dazzle camouflaged cathedral. Shot on 16mm with a cast of non-actors, the film presents a rich series of tableaux dense with the artist’s sculptures, backdrops and makeshift constructions. ‘Haukebodde Hacoud Hacwod Aukud’ is supported by .

Tonight, 7:30pm, online only, free
Join in with the conversation live via YouTube, link in bio.

This event will be an open conversation with the curators and some of the artists from the ‘Undisclosed’ exhibition currently on at The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral that seeks to expose Modern Slavery. It is a way of engaging people and communities in a conversation about an issue in the face of injustice.
The exhibition is free to visit and is on till 18th April 2022.

The exhibiting artists who will be speaking on the Assembly Online event are & , .rolf and , they will be joined by the curators .hockley and .

The space between the art world and Modern Slavery is a challenging one to negotiate; integrity is key. Being confronted with ethical issues and seeking to do justice to this hidden world required a depth of sensitivity, knowledge and determination. The artists traversed this space by creating artworks which highlight the power of Art, connecting our emotions and intelligence.
