Good night last night at "Modness". Didn't get to play all the music that I wanted to play, but tried to get a mix of musical styles. With 2 other DJ's playing "Northern" it was down to me & Jesse to play something a little different. I had a case full of "Morg" Northern Soul that I could have played, but we were looking for something a little different from the usual Northern nights. I think it went pretty well.
Amazing how nothing has changed since I was playing the same records at the "Morg" some 45 years ago! Northern soul, had just emerged back then and nothing has changed.
Same dance styles, same music, just like a time warp!!
Still I guess, that's how people like it! So keep the faith!
And yes, Jesse did 2 great sets. He was a little apprehensive at first, but really grew into it.l

Going to be playing lots of favourites on Saturday night.
Back to the days (69 - 71) when I was the regular DJ at the "Morg"
In those days we had live bands every Saturday night, but not just any live bands! We had amongst others: The Elgins, Edwin Starr, Jimmy Ruffin, Marv Johnson, Rufus Thomas, J J Jackson, Johnny Johnson & the Bandwagon, The Showstoppers & The Fantastics. I was fortunate enough to meet them all.
We played soul music (there was no such thing then as "Northern Soul" then, the phrase hadn't been invented), but you will all recognise the records, as they are now considered "Northern" classics. Plus there will be some other 60's soul too, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett etc & much, much more!

Did a gig in Flixton, Manchester last night. A celebration of 30 years of fundraising for The Christie Hospital, by a group of people called the Wibberley Thorne Society.
These amazing people have been collecting funds for the Christie (& other projects too) for 30 years. What started as a cricket match between two neighbouring streets in Flixton (hence the name) has evolved into a fantastic fundraising effort.
Last night one of the top research doctors from the Christie was at the gig to receive a cheque for £25,000, for much needed equipment in the fight against this horrible disease.
The event, called "The Big Night Out" had a live band (The Party Spies), a comedian (Tony Roscoe from Liverpool) & The Backtrax Roadshow Retro Disco.
Last night we played just 80's music & I felt very privileged to be part of this fantastic event. It was a good night. Thanks to my daughter Heidi & son in law Matt for their help with setting up & taking down the disco equipment.

Good gig last night, a 60th birthday party. Lots of chance to dig out the old records. Very eclectic music tastes from this lot!
Requests ranged from Yakkety Sax (Benny Hill theme), through Iron Maiden & Guns 'n Roses to Northern Soul & everything in between!
Big thanks to Matthew Bibby for his help in setting up & taking down all the equipment (we had the full rig out last night). Live band too, Urban Guerilla, who played a great set.
Next weekend we are playing "The Big Night Out" in Manchester, all 80's music & again a live band. Looking forward to it.
Don't forget, tickets are now available for "Modness" at Winnington Rec on 21st March. That also promises to be a great night. Let me know if you require tickets, £5 each, great value!

Before any other "Ahem", individual passes comment about the spelling mistake on the tickets! Yes we know and it's nothing to do with us! Error at the printers!

A couple of Birthday party "gigs" coming up soon with an opportunity to play some 60's, 70's & 80's music again.
Plus a rather special event in Manchester at the end of Feb, where I'll be sharing a stage with a comedian & a live band (not all at the same time)!
Its an 80's party to celebrate 30 years of fundraising for The Christie Hospital & promises to be a really good gig. 80's, 80's, 80s, all the way!!

It promises to be a great night and all for only a Fiver!!

Currently in talks with other parties to put together a "Mod" night at Winnington Rec. The event is to be called "Modness" & we are aiming for late March. (Poss Saturday 21st)
It will consist of two rooms, with two separate music set ups.
For my part, I'll have one of the rooms and will be concentrating on playing 60's "Mod" music ie Small Faces, The Who, Kinks etc. Also 60's "Morg" soul ie The Contours, Elgins, Bandwagon, Jimmy Ruffin and all the music that I used to play back in the day when the " Morg" used to feature top Motown/Soul acts. (late 60's/early 70's). This was before the term "Northern Soul" existed, although much of the music is/was the same.
Topping that lot off with some 60's Soul ie Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Arthur Conley, 60's Motown, plus some 70's & 80's music too, like The Jam, Specials etc. And just for good measure, a little helping of late 60's Reggae.
Looking at 8pm - 1am. with a late bar.
Flyers/posters should be out soon along with details for obtaining tickets.
Just a little change from the same old Northern Soul only nights.
It'll be good to play the music again!
