😎 It’s the and we’re joining National Lottery Heritage Fund today in celebrating !
🛠️ There's lots of industrial heritage at Royal Quays Marina, which is located within the old Albert Edward Dock in North Shields. The dock was constructed by the Tyne Improvement Commission at the entrance to the Coble Dene in the 1870s. Its main use was for the exportation of coal and the import of timber from the Baltic region. It was officially opened on August 21st 1884 by the Prince of Wales Albert Edward during a Royal Visit to the Tyne.
⚓ The basic structure of the old Dock is still there and can be followed within the area of the modern marina. The stone-built Accumulator Tower is a rare survivor from the original dock and was a vital part of the hydraulic machinery used for opening and closing the lock gates. The tower is the last remaining building of its kind on the Tyne and still contains some original features from the early days of hydraulic engineering.
ℹ️ The Accumulator Tower is not open to the public but many of the other features of the original Albert Edward Dock can be seen from the publicly accessible areas at Royal Quays Marina. You can explore a virtual tour of the marina here 👉 https://compass360tours.co.uk/tours/royalquaysmarina/
⛵🚤 There are also lots of modern and classic boats to look at in the marina basin and the entrance lock is still in daily use.
The Lock restaurant provides refreshments throughout the day.

📣 We're donating this watercolour painting by Norman Septimus Boyce for the auction at Low Lights Tavern this Thursday evening (10th March). The auction will raise funds for the commissioning of a statue to commemorate the women who contributed so much to the North Shields fishing industry. Ray Lonsdale (sculptor of the Fiddler's Green statue) will be commissioned to make this new 'Herring Girl' figure. The auction has been organised by North Shields Fishermens Heritage Project and there will be lots of lots going under the hammer.
⬇️ 'Under Tow' by Tyneside artist Norman Septimus Boyce (1895-1962) The painting measures 10" X 14.5" and it's in a gilded frame that measures 18.5" X 22.5". The artist was one of the sons of Tyneside artist W.T.N. Boyce (1857-1911). Norman served with the Royal Artillery in WW1, set up as a professional artist after the war until the outbreak of WW2 when he moved to Swindon to work in engineering (he began his working life as an engineering apprentice in the North East). He settled in Derby after the War and after retiring he returned to live on Tyneside.

NEW STOCK
One for lovers of tall ships and fine art!
A striking image of the golden age of sailing ships by well-known marine artist Rowland Langmaid (1897-1956).
This is an original drypoint etching signed in pencil by Langmaid and with the Academy Proof blind stamp. We believe this etching is titled 'Clipper Ship off Lands End'.
Langmaid specialised in producing etchings of ships and shipping and this is a very nice strong image of a rigged ship in full sail.
The etching is in great condition and is presented mounted and in a plain black frame.
These etchings by Langmaid were almost certainly produced in only limited editions - but this was before the time that artists numbered their prints and we don't know how many of this particular etching were produced. However, similar etchings with the same Academy Proof blind stamp were produced as a limited run of only 100 copies. This one could be the same.

Visible image size: 7 inches by 12 inches (18 cms x 31 cms)
Frame size: 16 inches by 20.5 inches (41 cms x 52 cms)

Please get in touch if you are interested in finding out more about this picture.

NEW
A very good quality lithographic reproduction from the original watercolour by Thomas Swift Hutton (1860-1928). Titled 'Seaton Sluice, Northumberland' this print was produced in an edition limited to 800 copies, of which this is number 45.

This is a very nice copy of the print with strong colours and it is framed in a lovely gilt frame and is presented in a double mount with hand-drawn wash lines.

The visible image size is 28 cm x 50 cm
The frame measures 55 cm x 81 cm

Thomas Swift Hutton was born on 22 July 1860 in St Cuthberts, Midlothian. He had two sons and four daughters with Isabella Thompson Donnison. He is described in various census returns as a Traveller and later as a Landscape Artist and Painter (1891). He died in Sunderland in October 1928. Hutton's paintings of North Sea coast villages are an important record of life in the 19th and early 20th Centuries

The artist painting at his easel depicted in this picture is almost certainly a 'self portrait' of Hutton himself and perhaps the figures sitting nearby are his wife or children.
