We’ve been out again in Preston tonight speaking to residents and looking at a number of issues raised with us 🏠

We came away genuinely angry and disappointed by what we saw. Weeds, rubbish, neglected back lanes and basic maintenance simply aren’t at the standard residents should expect, particularly when we pay some of the highest levels of council tax in North Tyneside 👎

After 13 years of Labour running North Tyneside, we share the growing anger that too many of the basics are just being neglected.😡

Thanks to everyone who took the time to come out and speak to us tonight. We’ll be putting all the issues raised through to the Council tomorrow and pushing to get them sorted 👍

Lovely to be out and about in the ward today, visiting residents and following up on local issues 😊

🌳 North Tyneside Council’s tree management policy remains far too restrictive. We’re dealing with several cases where trees are potentially causing structural damage to properties, as well as very large trees that need sensible cutting back.

👏 On a positive note, our NHS neighbours at North Tyneside General Hospital have done another fantastic job cutting the grass and collecting the cuttings on the footpath to Rosewood and Rake Lane. The area looks really well cared for and it makes such a difference. Thanks for the quick turnaround on this 👍

It’s just a shame the Council doesn’t take the same approach to collecting grass cuttings! 🌿

Really good ward catch-up this morning, going through the long list of issues we’re currently working on for residents across Preston and Preston Grange.

Among the issues discussed were:

🅿️ Parking issues

We’re continuing to chase up outstanding issues with the Council and other agencies and hope to have updates on lots of these over the coming weeks.

GOOD NEWS: Fridge and freezer disposal is back ♻️

We’re pleased to see that North Tyneside Council has now reopened fridge and freezer disposal at the tip and resumed bulky waste collections.

Last week, following the Council’s decision to suspend both services, Liam wrote to the Mayor demanding urgent action. He raised concerns about how residents were supposed to safely and legally dispose of unwanted appliances, the lack of an obvious contingency plan, and the potential risk of increased fly-tipping.

A week later, the Council has confirmed that the backlog has been cleared sufficiently for both services to resume. That is very welcome news for residents.

However, there are still questions that need answering. We need to understand why there wasn’t a workable contingency in place, what alternatives were explored before residents were told to store unwanted appliances at home indefinitely, and what lessons have been learned if this national problem happens again.

We’ll continue pressing for those answers - but for now, we’re pleased residents once again have a safe and legal way to get rid of their unwanted fridges and freezers.

We’ve been out and about on beautiful, leafy Cleveland Road this morning, following up on a number of issues raised with us by local residents 🌳

There’s no doubt that parts of the area are in need of a good environmental tidy-up and clean-up. We’ve taken photographs of a number of areas of concern and will be getting these reported to the Council first thing tomorrow morning. 👍

It was also really useful to hear residents’ views on some of the wider issues affecting our area, including the regeneration of North Shields town centre, the ongoing concerns around the closure of High Borrans, and the challenges residents are facing with parking 🚘

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to stop and speak to us this morning. We’ll be following up on all of the issues raised.

Thank you to everyone who came out and spoke to me during my Monkswood walkabout this afternoon. It was great to catch up with so many residents on a lovely late summer afternoon ☀️

I’ve come away with a bumper list of 19 issues to report to the Council, including tree cutbacks, weeding and environmental work, trip hazards following previous electrical cabling works, repainting white lines at the entrance to the estate and a request to remove the grassed area adjacent to the allotment entrance to create one continuous footpath✔️

I’ve also been asked to explore the possibility of lighting along the footpath to the Garden of Remembrance that was previously rejected , which itself needs a significant cut back and tidy up 🧹

There was also a request for an additional litter bin. I know people understandably don’t always want bins immediately next to their homes, so I’d welcome suggestions from residents about where an additional bin could be most usefully and appropriately located 🗑️

There are no guarantees that everything requested will be possible, particularly some of the larger pieces of work, but I’ll submit all 19 issues and follow them up😊

🚧 Beach Road – Road Closure 🚧

Just a heads-up for residents that Beach Road will be closed for carriageway resurfacing works from Sunday 16 August until Friday 21 August.

📍 The works will take place from the Coast Road junction for approximately 300 metres north along Beach Road.

⚠️ A road closure will be in place while the work is carried out, and delays are likely in the surrounding area.

Please bear this in mind when planning journeys and allow a little extra time.

We’ll share any further information if we receive it.

Thank you to everyone who got in touch after we raised concerns about food waste caddies being delivered to households who had opted out in our ward 📞

What appeared to be an issue affecting residents in Preston with Preston Grange has since been reported by residents in other parts of North Tyneside

The Council has now confirmed that some caddies were delivered in error and has apologised. It has also confirmed that 131 requests have already been made for unwanted caddies to be collected 👎

We still have questions about what went wrong and how many households who formally opted out received a caddy anyway. Hopefully the Council can now establish the full picture and make sure the opt-out information is being properly handled

We took a walk around Preston Cemetery today after a number of residents contacted us by telephone, email and social media with concerns about its condition 👍

While much of the cemetery is well maintained, there are areas that appear neglected, with overgrown vegetation, fallen memorials and tree root damage 😔

We have a big list of jobs and we will be asking the council:

Why are some areas not being maintained? ✔️
How often are memorials inspected for safety?✔️
What is being done about tree root damage 🌳
Are there plans to improve the older parts of the cemetery? 📅
