Located beneath the world-famous Forth Rail Bridge, Deep Sea World is Scotland’s national aquarium. Over 40 displays, including the 4.5-million-litre Underwater Safari with its walkthrough tunnel, are home to hundreds of fascinating creatures, ranging from seals and seahorses to stingrays and giant sand tiger sharks. MEET THE DOGFACE PUFFER!

Those big eyes and distinctive markings make our dogface pufferfish hard to miss! 👀

But there's more to this fish than its funny face. It has a powerful, beak-like mouth that helps it crunch through hard-shelled prey, and it can even inflate its body when it feels threatened. Pretty impressive! 🤯

Meet the scarlet pistol shrimp, one of the ocean’s tiniest creatures with a seriously impressive superpower.

Hidden among coral reefs and rocky habitats, this colourful little shrimp has a specialised snapping claw that can create a powerful shockwave in the water. 💥🌊

But how does a tiny shrimp make such a BIG snap?

Its claw closes incredibly quickly, creating a jet of water and a tiny bubble. When that bubble collapses, it produces the famous “snap”, helping the pistol shrimp catch prey and defend itself.

And while the scarlet pistol shrimp isn’t currently classed as endangered, its marine habitat still needs protecting.

Coral reefs and coastal ecosystems face threats from warming oceans, pollution, habitat destruction and climate change, putting pressure on the incredible marine life that depends on them. 🪸💙

We took our camera beneath the surface to see what happens when the seals take a dip, and they certainly know how to make the most of the space!
