Newry held to ransom by sectarian bigots

A Sectarian Spectacle at Newry's Expense

Saoradh Newry’s office has been inundated with complaints from local residents, workers and business owners over the disruption, congestion and sectarian displays that have been imposed upon the town in recent days.

On Friday evening, the town centre should have been thriving. Newry should have been alive with people meeting friends, enjoying a meal, socialising, having a few drinks and supporting the local businesses whose livelihoods depend upon a vibrant town centre.

Instead, residents were confronted with the extraordinary spectacle of the town centre resembling a ghost town.
Businesses were left empty, streets were deserted and normal life was effectively disrupted, while dozens of sectarian hate bands, many bussed in from across the Six Counties, were afforded the space and freedom to parade through the community.

It is a damning reflection of a society in which sectarianism continues to be accommodated and facilitated, while the legitimate concerns of local residents and businesses are routinely pushed to the margins.

The message being sent to the local community is stark: their right to go about their daily lives, operate their businesses and enjoy their own town can apparently be subordinated to the demands of sectarian parades.

And on Saturday, the situation had deteriorated further, with Newry gridlocked and effectively brought to a standstill for prolonged periods, most of the day in fact.

The economic consequences for local businesses cannot simply be dismissed. Small businesses invest heavily in the city centre, employ local people and contribute to the community throughout the year. They should not be expected to absorb the financial losses caused by events over which they have no control.

Likewise, residents should not have to tolerate prolonged disruption, congestion, intimidation or the imposition of overt sectarianism in their own community.

It is inconceivable that an entire community is expected to simply accept disruption and sectarian displays as an unavoidable part of life.

Newry is a diverse and vibrant town. Its future should not be dictated by sectarianism, division, bigotry or the interests of those determined to impose themselves upon others.

The people of Newry deserve a town centre where businesses can prosper, families can enjoy themselves, visitors can come and go freely, and everyone can feel comfortable and welcome.

Sectarianism should never be allowed to come at the expense of an entire community.

Newry deserves better. Its residents deserve better. Its businesses deserve better.

In Memory of Volunteer Patrick “Patsy” McKeown

Newry Brigade, IRA
Killed on Active Service – 27 August 1974
Barcroft Park, Newry, County Down

Our Newry office remember with pride Óglach Patrick “Patsy” McKeown who gave his life in the struggle for Irish freedom on this date in 1974, when an explosion occurred at a house in Barcroft Park, Newry. Patsy bore the full impact of the blast and was killed instantly while on active service.

Patsy was not just a Volunteer, he was a husband, a father to four children, a man who loved music and dancing, and who served others through his work in nursing. His dedication to both his family and his cause are remembered with pride.

His courage and sacrifice live on in the hearts of all who honour his memory.

“Fuair sé bás ar son saoirse na hÉireann.”
He died for Ireland’s freedom.

Saoradh Slam Attempted Break-ins in Newry

Saoradh has urged residents to remain vigilant and take additional precautions following a number of attempted break-ins in the Derrybeg and surrounding
areas of Newry on Thursday night, August 13th.

Saoradh was contacted by local residents who were directly affected by these unwanted and deeply concerning intrusions. Particularly disturbing is the fact that the homeowners were present in their properties when attempts were made to gain entry.

Those targeted are decent and respected members of the local community who should be able to feel safe and secure in their own homes. Their treatment stands in stark contrast to the cowardly and anti-social behaviour displayed by those responsible.

Saoradh activists have met and spoken with those affected and understand their understandable concerns and distress following these incidents. No family should have to experience the fear and uncertainty associated with having their home targeted, particularly while they are inside.

We are therefore urging all residents to remain vigilant, look out for their neighbours and take practical steps to improve the security of their homes. Ensure doors and windows are properly secured and avoid leaving valuables on display.

Those who prey upon members of their own community have no place within it and should be rejected and ostracised by all decent people.

Saoradh has consistently sought to address issues affecting working-class communities and to support residents who find themselves facing difficulties. We will continue to engage with local people, offer assistance where possible and stand alongside those who require support.

We urge residents to remain vigilant, take sensible preventative measures and look out for one another. A strong and united community is best placed to protect its residents and ensure that anti-social and criminal elements cannot intimidate or exploit local people.

Saoradh remains committed to working on behalf of the community and contributing towards making our areas safer places for everyone who lives in them.

Our communities belong to the people who live in them. Those who seek to intimidate, exploit or prey upon their neighbours should know that their behaviour will be firmly rejected.

Anyone who may have information relating to these incidents is encouraged to pass it on to a Saoradh activist or contact our Newry office at 32 St Mary's Street.
