**I Communicate in My Own Way**

A gentle and inclusive children’s story that celebrates the many different ways children communicate.

Not every child communicates using spoken words. Some use gestures, facial expressions, pictures, signs, sounds or communication devices and every way of communicating deserves to be noticed, understood and valued.

*I Communicate in My Own Way* encourages children, families and caregivers to look beyond words, listen with patience and recognise that every child has something meaningful to say.

A reassuring story about understanding, acceptance and finding your own unique voice, because communication does not always sound the same, but every voice matters.

✨ WE’VE BEEN SHORTLISTED! ✨

I’m absolutely delighted to share that I’ve been shortlisted for Best Businesswoman at the Greater Newry Business Awards 2026! 🏆💜

Anyone who runs a business knows how much goes on behind the scenes, the long days, late nights, constant ideas, worrying, juggling family life and probably questioning yourself about 100 times along the way 😂

So to be recognised and shortlisted amongst so many amazing businesswomen across the Greater Newry area genuinely means so much to me.

From starting Little Explorers with a vision of creating something special for children and families, to watching it grow into what it is today, there have been plenty of highs, lows, risks and lessons along the way but I wouldn’t change the journey.

A massive thank you to our incredible team, our families and everyone who has supported me and Little Explorers over the years, none of it would be possible without you.

Now to get the glad rags ready for the Gala Awards Night on 24th September! 🥂✨

Whatever happens on the night, being shortlisted is something I’m incredibly proud of, even if it’s just being recognised 🫶🏻

✨ This story came to me in just one afternoon ✨

After a personal experience, I sat down and within an hour, the whole storyline of My Backpack Full of Feelings had come together. It came from something real, a moment that made me think differently about just how much our little ones can carry throughout their day 🤍

Now available as a digital download, ready to read straight from your child’s iPad or tablet at bedtime, during a quiet moment together, or just before school.

Because sometimes the biggest feelings are the ones they’ve been carrying quietly all day.

Look beyond the behaviour… there’s a whole little backpack of feelings behind it 🎒🫶🏻

My Backpack Full of Feelings

I’ve gone back and forth so many times about how I wanted to share this book. I originally planned to have it printed, but in the end, I kept coming back to one thing. I just want this story to reach the families who might need it.

So, I’ve decided to try something a little different and release *My Backpack Full of Feelings* as a **digital book**, making it easy to purchase, download and read together straight away.

And with our little ones returning to school, it feels like the perfect time to share it.

This book came from a very personal experience and from seeing first hand just how much children can hold in throughout their day, only for those emotions to come pouring out when they finally reach their safe place.

Sometimes we see the meltdown, the tears or the behaviour, but we don’t always see everything that came before it.

My biggest hope for this book is that it might help us understand **what’s happening behind those big emotions and inside their little minds**. To look beyond the behaviour, start conversations and understand what our children may be trying to tell us when they don’t yet have the words to say it.

Their little minds are carrying and processing so much more than we sometimes realise.

**DIGITAL COPY NOW AVAILABLE**
Purchase, download and start reading straight away.

With the return to school getting closer, I wanted to share a little of what school anxiety can actually look like for us 🫶🏻

Every child experiences anxiety differently. It doesn’t always look like refusing to go to school or crying at the gates. Sometimes the child who looks completely fine in school is using every bit of energy they have to hold themselves together.

For us, it can look like…

Physical feelings so tummy aches, butterflies and suddenly needing the toilet in school first thing. One of our biggest struggles has been using the toilet in school before class, she will hold it until break rather than ask to go, and sometimes in the morning I physically have to bring her to the toilet before I leave.

Difficult mornings so not every morning, and sometimes weeks can pass without any difficulty. But occasionally, getting ready or saying goodbye suddenly feels much harder.

The endless “what ifs” especially when something changes in her normal school routine. Someone new visiting the classroom, a different activity or simply not knowing exactly what is happening can bring endless questions, sometimes starting the night before.

Reassurance, who will be there? What will happen? What if I do something wrong? Again, usually when something feels new or unfamiliar.

Sleep difficulties we only really experience this when there’s a change coming. Routine helps us massively. Summer has completely knocked our normal routine, so getting back into it next week will probably take a little patience!

Irritability and overwhelm after school, this is a big one. She can hold everything together all day and then come home and release it. Everything can annoy her. There can be tears or meltdowns over something that appears tiny.

At one stage, her anxiety also showed through skin picking until she drew blood. Thankfully, we have this much more under control now, but we struggled with it for a long time.

Fear of getting things wrong, she likes everything to be perfect, with homework, she sometimes won’t let me cross out a wrong answer because she’s afraid she’ll get into trouble for getting it wrong.

There have been evenings I’ve chosen not to continue with homework because the fear, frustration and overwhelm simply weren’t worth it. She’s already spent an entire day learning. As she gets older, we’ll navigate that differently where necessary.

And probably the biggest one for us…MASKING!

I hear, “She’s great in school. We have no concerns.”and don’t get me wrong I completely believe it.

But it can also become frustrating when there isn’t enough understanding around childhood anxiety and masking, she will do everything she possibly can to be good, follow the rules and stay out of trouble. It’s amazing how their little brains work.

Then she’ll come home and tell me another child punched her on the back or wouldn’t let her come out of the bathroom, but she didn’t tell the teacher because she was afraid she would get into trouble or that the other child would!

That’s the part of masking that teachers, professionals and even parents don’t necessarily get to see.

I’m very lucky that she has the vocabulary to come home and explain these things to me. It has taught me to really listen to what our children tell us about their day, even when everything appears perfectly fine from the outside.

Then there’s the exhaustion afterwards.

Some days she’s happy and completely herself. Other days she’s emotional, irritable, overwhelmed or simply exhausted from holding everything together.

If she comes back to my afterschool afterwards, somewhere she feels completely safe, it’s almost like the pressure is released, that’s where we can see the energy, the silliness, the calm and sometimes the meltdowns, she knows the staff, she trusts them and is comfortable around them, she isn’t frightened to be herself.

It’s funny how it works.

From the outside, some of those behaviours could easily be seen as simply “behavioural.” I’ve questioned it myself.

I’ve questioned myself too. Is it me? Have I let her away with too much? Am I getting this completely wrong?

But I’ve learned that behaviour and anxiety aren’t always separate things. Sometimes what looks like difficult behaviour is a child finally releasing everything they’ve worked so hard to contain.

We do NOT experience all of these things every day.

That’s so important for me to say.

She loves school. She has brilliant days. She has made amazing friendships and loves her teachers. She has come so far. Anxiety isn’t necessarily constant, sometimes it appears when routines change, expectations feel uncertain or something unfamiliar is coming, it dosent just happen in school, but at gymnastics, Irish dancing etc!

I’m sharing our experience because another parent might be looking at their child and wondering the same things I have.

With children returning to school, nursery and childcare, remember that bravery doesn’t always mean not being scared.

Sometimes bravery is walking through that door with a tummy full of butterflies 🦋

That’s exactly why I wrote I Can Be Brave Without You, because I’ve seen these big feelings from both sides, as a childcare provider and as a mammy.

Here’s to gentle mornings, brave goodbyes, understanding teachers, patient parents, safe spaces and lots of happy reunions 🫶🏻

To my new followers… A little bit about me, and the reason I wrote my book, I Can Be Brave Without You 📘

If you have a little one starting nursery, school, daycare or somewhere new, this book might be for you 🫶🏻

My name is Aoife (McParland) Watters, I’m 31, a mum of two beautiful children aged 4 and 5, and I opened Little Explorers Daycare when I was just 24. Since then, we’ve grown and now have our sister daycare in Culloville too! Little Explorers Daycare & Afterschool - Belleek Little Explorers Daycare and Afterschool - Culloville

Every day I’m surrounded by children with huge imaginations, endless curiosity and, sometimes, really big emotions. Over the years, I’ve helped so many families through those difficult first drop offs.

I’ve watched mums cry. I’ve watched dads struggle. I’ve watched parents sit in their cars after leaving their little one, wondering if they were doing the right thing.

And I was always the one reassuring them:

“They’ll be okay.”
“It’s completely normal.”
“Give them time.”

But the truth is, I never fully understood that feeling.

My own children had always been with me at Little Explorers. It was their second home. They knew the faces, the rooms and the routines.

Then came Ealach Mae’s first day of nursery, she was excited, until she wasn’t. Suddenly, I was the mum walking away from my crying child. I got into my car and cried too! 🥹

For the first time, I truly understood every parent who had ever stood in front of me struggling to leave.

Fast forward, she did eventually settle, but it wasn’t easy. There were days I questioned everything. I wondered if I should just keep her with me for another year and let her place go!

But we persevered, and I’m so glad we did.

Then came Primary 1 and we started all over again. A bigger school. New faces. New routines, but same friends!

Her anxiety returned. She would tell me her tummy hurt, that she had butterflies, or simply:

“Mummy, I can’t do this, I can’t do this.”

Some mornings she cried. Some mornings she panicked. Some days I walked away from that school door and cried myself. The hardest part was knowing that once she got inside, she was okay.

She would come home smiling and tell me she’d had a brilliant day, only for the fear to return again the next morning, that was when I really began to understand separation anxiety.

Her feelings weren’t silly or something she could simply switch off. They were real, and they felt enormous inside her little body, but it’s not until you witness this as a parent that you can understand it, not even their own teacher!

She hasn’t simply “grown out of it”, and that’s okay, she’s still young, she’s still learning and in her own time, that she can be brave without me.

And that is where this book came from. I wrote I Can Be Brave Without You for Ealach Mae.

But I also wrote it for every little child standing at a nursery, school or daycare door feeling scared and for the children who don’t yet have the words to explain what they’re feeling.

I wrote it for the parents too. The ones who cry in the car. The ones who question themselves. The ones carrying guilt because leaving feels completely unnatural.

I want children to know, it’s okay to feel scared. Your feelings matter & Mummy or Daddy will always come back. I want parents to remember that some children run through those doors without looking back, while others need a little more time, reassurance and support. Neither is wrong.

Our children aren’t trying to make things difficult. Sometimes, they’re simply communicating the only way they know how.

Childhood anxiety is real, and it deserves patience, understanding and love.

I’m not a trained writer and writing a children’s book was never part of my plan. It simply came from love, lived experience, 13+ years of caring for little ones, and one little girl who taught her mummy what being brave really means.

If I Can Be Brave Without You helps even one little child feel understood, or helps one parent sitting in their car after drop off feel a little less alone, then writing it was worth every second 🫶🏻

“My Backpack Full of Feelings”

For so long, people saw a little girl who was coping.

I saw the child who came home completely overwhelmed.

She had spent all day carrying emotions that nobody else could see.

This book is my way of helping children understand those feelings, helping parents feel less alone, and reminding adults that behaviour is only part of the story.

Every child is carrying something. Sometimes we just need to help them unpack it 🎒
