Rocoto’s first swim 🐧💦

Born to parents Williams & Churro this little chick is the only one to hatch at the zoo this year. Now at 12 weeks old, they felt ready to take the plunge and join the rest of the family in the water👏

Keepers have named the chick ‘Rocoto’ - a type of chilli pepper in Peru🌶️

This name fits the South American theme across the NZ colony of Humboldt penguins, as they are native to the coasts of Peru and Chile 🇵🇪🇨🇱

🏆 Newquay Zoo Dad of the Year Awards 🏆

🐵 Dourado the Golden Lion Tamarin
The Experienced Dad Award
Golden lion tamarin dads are famously hands-on, often carrying infants on their backs for much of the day and only handing them back to mum for feeding. Dourado knows a thing or two about raising the next generation.

🐱 Onyx the Carpathian Lynx
The Protector Award
A devoted dad to last year's lynx kitten, Onyx is a calm and confident presence in the family. He's also one of the few animals brave enough to stand his ground with the fiery Kicsi.

🐷 Randy the Visayan Warty Pig
The Laid-Back Dad Award
Proof that parenting isn't always about rushing around. Randy takes life at his own pace, and in the wild, warty pigs live in close family groups where adults work together to keep youngsters safe.

🐧 Williams the Humboldt Penguin
The Rookie Dad Award
A new father this year, Williams has taken to parenthood like a penguin to water. Humboldt penguin parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties, making teamwork essential for raising a healthy chick.

🚧 New worlds are beginning to emerge at Newquay Zoo...

If you've visited recently, you may have spotted a few barriers and diggers around the zoo. Behind the scenes, we're beginning an exciting new chapter as we transform parts of the site into more immersive spaces designed to bring you closer to wildlife than ever before.

One of the first changes you'll start to see is our new Savannah route, creating fresh viewpoints and new ways to experience some of your favourite animals. Along the route, we're developing new habitats for species including meerkats, porcupines and caracals, with some exciting new arrivals planned for the future too... 👀

And that's just the beginning.

Work is also underway on a brand-new Madagascar experience, including a walkthrough habitat with free-roaming lemurs and a nocturnal environment. This future habitat will eventually become home to one of the world's most unusual primates – the aye-aye.

As we continue to evolve, our goal is to create spaces that feel more immersive, more engaging and more connected to the natural world, making every visit feel like an adventure of discovery.

This summer marks the start of that journey, and we can't wait to share more with you as these new worlds begin to emerge.

Watch this space... 🌿🦒✨

Our Humboldt penguin family just got a little bigger… we have recently welcomed a chick into the world!🐧🐣

Proud parents Williams and Churro are doing a fantastic job one month into parenthood, and their little one is growing well under their watchful eyes. In these photos, you can see Keeper Dan carefully weighing the chick, an important part of monitoring its development.

🐣 What happens next?

🐧 Humboldt penguin chicks are covered in soft down at first and will stay in the nest and rely on their parents for warmth and food. They are usually dependent on mum and dad for around 2–3 months, being fed regurgitated fish.

🌊 At around 10–12 weeks old, they begin to lose their fluffy down and waterproof feathers grow in. Once fully feathered, they become “fledged” and ready to take their first swims, marking a big milestone in their journey to independence!

We can’t wait to watch this little one grow and keep you updated along the way🐧Come on down to the penguin pool to see if you can spot this little fluffball!💙
