Here she is - the finished pet portrait of beautiful Sydney. ☺️

I drew this one a couple of months ago as a surprise birthday gift from my client to her husband, and I'm so pleased to say they were absolutely thrilled with it.

I love drawing flat-coated retrievers, and this commission was a real pleasure from start to finish. After hearing all about Sydney's love of the water, depicting her in a lake, fresh from a swim, felt like the perfect setting for her portrait.

I always love drawing pets in their happy places, capturing them in a setting that really adds to the life and personality of the portrait. This portrait of Sydney the flat-coated retriever was no exception.

That beautiful, expressive face and those gorgeous amber eyes were a real pleasure to capture in pastels. In this portrait Sydney was fresh from a swim, and there was that wonderful wet, slightly bedraggled look to work with - which, according to my client, is very much the real Sydney. 😅

The thing I love most about drawing pets is that every single one is different.
Not just in how they look, but in who they are. The expression that's unmistakably theirs. The tilt of the head. The quirks only their family would recognise.

Before I begin a portrait, I ask my clients to tell me all about their pet. The photo is the starting point. The personality is the whole picture.

I draw in pastels, which are wonderful for fur, and for eyes especially. Capturing all those little nuances that make your pet them are so important.

This gorgeous girl is Sydney, a flat-coated retriever with bags of energy and a slightly bonkers personality. She has a real love for stone-fishing, diving down and bringing up rocks in her teeth! My client described her as an absolute sweetheart, and very clearly a water dog at heart.

When it came to choosing a setting for her pet portrait, a lake scene felt like the perfect choice. Sydney, fresh from a swim, in her happy place! ☺️

These photos are from the early stages of Sydney's portrait, drawn a couple of months ago. It was commissions as a surprise birthday gift for my client's husband.

Injecting some summer coastal vibes into the start of your week. 🌊

This little oil painting was created to transport you straight to the sea - the water lapping at your toes, the feeling of soft sand beneath your feet.

Inspired by the beautiful Cornish coastline, it's currently on display at Colour & Space art gallery in Perranporth. If you're visiting, it's well worth seeing in person.

I'm so lucky to live on the north coast of Cornwall. It provides endless inspiration. 🌊

I spend so much time walking the coastline and being in the sea, and it's those experiences that feed directly into my seascape paintings — the colour, the energy, the feeling of the water.

This reel gives a little behind-the-scenes look at my latest piece. It starts on the cliffs, watching the waves break below, and follows the whole painting process through to the finished artwork.

Those rich blues and turquoises, that sense of movement — this is what I'm always trying to capture.

You send me your photos and tell me about your pet — their personality, what makes them them. I draw them in pastels, building up the portrait layer by layer.

When it's finished, you see it first. I'll email you a photo of the drawing for your approval before I ask for the final payment or post anything out. Any small tweaks you'd like, I'm happy to make them.

Then it's carefully packaged and sent to you.

There's something about painting a stormy sea that gets right under the skin.
This piece has been such an absorbing painting to work on — layer by layer, stroke by stroke, trying to capture that raw, wild energy that the Cornish coast brings.
