Big Splash Newport's free family street theatre festival Big Splash returns for 2022!

Big Splash is an annual event recognised as the largest free outdoor arts festival in Wales, featuring live music, street theatre, dance performances, workshops, craft and activities for all the family, all free of charge. Join us on Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 July for a weekend jam-packed with free activity for all ages including theatre, music, workshops and arts and crafts. Watch in amazement as t

he familiar city centre streets are transformed into a huge outdoor stage with dare-devil performances, immersive experiences and plenty of laughs popping up where you least expect them! Information about all the acts joining the Big Splash 2022 line up will be released very soon, but The Riverfront and it’s partners promise to bring back some Big Splash favourites as well as some new and exciting acts to enjoy. There will be live music, workshops, community performances and of course a wide variety of diverse street theatre acts all ready to entertain all ages. The Riverfront are once again delighted to be partnering with Newport’s Le Pub this year to bring back the Big Splash Busk. Big Splash 2022 has been made possible thanks to the generous funding from Arts Council Wales and Newport Live, as well as sponsorship from Friars Walk and The Newport Now Business Improvement District (BID).

This weekend would traditionally have been when Newport came alive with the Big Splash festival - and while we're disappointed not to be celebrating together this year, we're taking the opportunity to look back on the incredible memories, performances and moments that make Big Splash so special.

From unforgettable street theatre and spectacular performances to family fun and community spirit, Big Splash has brought people together year after year.

Big Splash 2026 Funding Update from Newport Live

Big Splash, the largest free outdoor arts festival in Wales, has become a highlight of Newport’s cultural calendar, welcoming over 20,000 visitors each year to the event at The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre.

Newport Live can confirm that its recent application for Arts Council Wales funding to support the 2026 festival was unsuccessful in a highly competitive process. While this is disappointing, this decision relates specifically to the 2026 event.

We remain fully committed to the long-term future of Big Splash and will continue to seek funding through future opportunities.

We recognise how valued the festival is to the local community and are actively exploring alternative funding options and delivery models.

Our team is working hard behind the scenes to deliver a version of Big Splash in 2026 if at all possible. Further updates will be shared in due course.
