Thanks to the team at GoodChaos, we’ve been fortunate enough to share our learnings from community ownership and the success of Own Our Venues with venues and cultural leaders across Chicago.

Over the last few days, we’ve had the chance to visit an amazing range of spaces, from piano bars and jazz hotspots to dive bars, brilliant Grassroots Music Venues, stunning theatres and brand-new outdoor community spaces.

It’s been particularly valuable to meet with members of CIVL and begin exploring a model that could help secure venues across the city.

We’re excited to keep the conversations going and help develop new solutions for the future of Chicago’s vital cultural spaces.

Yesterday we spent some time at Bedford Esquires, catching up with Gareth, the venue operator.

As ever, the biggest takeaway from the day was the passion and commitment that goes into keeping a grassroots venue like Esquires at the heart of its community. Gareth’s knowledge of the venue, its community and what makes Esquires such an important part of Bedford’s cultural life really shone through.

Conversations like this are a reminder of why long-term security for Grassroots Venues matters.

Welcome and a huge thank you to our new members! In just the last two weeks, more than 75 of you have invested in MVP, taking our member total to over 2,600!

Every single co-owner is helping build a different future for grassroots music venues: one where they’re owned by the communities they serve and can continue to be part of the fabric of their towns and cities for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us, supported us and believed in what we’re building. This community is growing, and it’s only just getting started!

For the last 20 years, The Ferret has been a vital part of Preston’s grassroots music scene and a key community asset.

Hosting more than 200 gigs every year, the venue has welcomed legendary shows and helped countless emerging artists find their audience.

In 2022, when the building was put up for sale, the community rallied to fight for its survival. In 2024, its future was secured when The Ferret became the second property purchased by Music Venue Properties through community ownership.

Today, The Ferret continues to do what grassroots music venues do best: champion emerging talent, bring communities together and keep live music thriving, all in the heart of Preston.
