Last day of Open Studios. We’ve greatly enjoyed meeting people and getting to know local artists - thank you to all our lovely visitors. The exhibition will still be up for a couple of weeks in its current form. DM or ring the house doorbell (the dog will bark loudly) if you want to visit.

The sea around the south west peninsula changes colour with the sky, cloud formation, season and time of day. Grey skies and heavy cloud seem to change the sea to a pale jade green. But I prefer to paint the sea on sunny days, when light dances and reflects in the shallows.

Ancient Depths Surge
After a dramatic walk from Land’s End, or after taking an alternate route across field edged with poppies and cornflowers, you reach the dark, brooding cliffs which tower above Nanjizal beach. These frame a slim arch in the rocks, through which light streams and dances onto the turquoise water below. The arch is aptly named ‘Song of the Sea’.

Nanquidno and adjacent Cot Valley are special places to visit. In both the road winds down through trees in a very sheltered valley and is replaced by a track that follows a babbling brook towards the sea. Once a place of industry, but now deserted, they still bear the scars of their mining past, but these have mostly been reclaimed by nature. The beautiful teal sea crashes majestically over round boulders below in these havens for birds, including rare Choughs, often heard crying above the sound of the swell.

The Penwith Moors
The moorland around the Penwith Peninsula has a beauty all of its own. Deeply scarred from mining, nature has quietly and unceasingly reclaimed these havens for wildlife. They are a delight for the senses: the fragrance of heather and gorse, the sound of insects and birds and the colours of lichen and foliage changing with the seasons. The ever-present wind can be soft and playful, or biting with driving rain.
